Couple of reasons come to mind: - Car is too low (or jack is too high) to get a jack under the car at the "hockey puck" locations (jack plate sits a bit higher); - One wants to put two jackstands under both positions on that side of the car. - To properly, and safely, work on one wheel area, jack from the jack point with a jack plate and place a jack stand at that "hockey puck". If you run it in the typical ninety degree angle, you can run out of room. Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2006 00:08:00 EDT From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] jacking plate Bob - I'd argue it is easier to use a jack plate. Several people have already mentioned several reasons. My #1 reason is to allow me to put jack stands at the hockey pucks. More reasons below: 1. What hockey pucks? I'll wager most E36 models are missing one or more of the hockey pucks. They sure tend to fall off my M3. I usually use a short block of 1 x 2 at the missing hockey puck. 2. My Sears floor jack has a saddle that is almost the exact diameter of the hockey pucks. This results in the hockey pucks getting wedged (stuck) into my jack saddle every time I jack at the hockey pucks. I have to pry them out with a screwdriver. 3. Maybe faster. You can at least see where the place the jack on the jackplate. With the hockey puck method, you have to get on your knees to make sure you have the jack placed correctly. Lowell Seaton '95 M3
