#4. Oil changes and HPDEs - from Gus Iverson
Top
Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2006 12:17:05 -0700 From: "Gus Iverson" <gus.iverson@gmail.com> Subject: Oil changes and HPDEs Made the trip down to Thunderhill from Seattle a couple weekends ago. Changed the oil with Amsoil 5w40 Euro car formula just beforehand. Oil consumption in my car was radically reduced by the Amsoil - previously using Mobil 1 5w30 I would burn a quart of oil at a track day. With the Amsoil, I burned 1 quart over the whole trip. The oil looks fine and I've got another track weekend coming up so I'm planning to change it, but it begs the question - how often do you / should you change oil when considering HPDE events? Usually, I typically change the oil in my cars soon before or after (depending on when last changed) an event. Seeing as I get to about 1-2 events a month, that tends toward 1-2k (or shorter) oil change intervals which is rather a lot of expensive synthetc oil. Am I being excessive here? I'm rather convinced my car needs a change after the Thunderhill trip but I'm not sure about the rest. Thanks Gus

Both of those would tend to be too thin for track use. I have a post by Bob Stommel at home from the early days of this list. Basically you want 15W50 for track use. Period. (As always, you're free to do it your own way :-)) > Am I being excessive here? I'm rather convinced my car needs a change > after the Thunderhill trip but I'm not sure about the rest. When I was tracking the M3, I would change the oil about every 4000-4500 miles; basically twice as frequently as the SI lights. This was back when I was at the track every other weekend. On the race car I change oil about every 3000-5000 miles. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP

For reference, last year I did 28 track days which was approximately 4,500 track miles. I changed my engine, tranny and diff oil once. I am going to Road America tomorrow for a three day DE with Badger Bimmers. The rumor is that Sabine Schmitz is supposed to show up and is offering rides at $100/each. I think I'll pass on that... -- Jamie Howton 2006 M Roadster 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

#7. Diff bushing tool? - from William Townsend

Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2006 16:00:13 -0400 From: "William Townsend" <wtownsend@juniper.net> Subject: Diff bushing tool? Anyone out there bought the tool to remove the front diff bushing from the carrier? Anyone make one? My bushing is cracked like ya read about and the diff cover has a leak (my fault replacing the cover). Going to drop the diff and figure the bushing and bolt should be replaced. Any help on locating the tool or how to make it would be great! --Bill 96 M3 coupe red

#8. Raybestos ST-43??? - from William Townsend

Date: Wed, 6 Sep 2006 16:06:36 -0400 From: "William Townsend" <wtownsend@juniper.net> Subject: Raybestos ST-43??? More inquiring minds want to know.... Anyone try these pads? Porterfield sells them for the front of the M3 and wondered if there was any experience with them. With PFC, Hawk, and Cobalt hiking prices, it would be nice to find a less expensive alternative! I know, I know, Raybestos make plain old street pads but I guess they make race pads for NASCAR. (and the good thing is the pads are not uni-directional!) --Bill 96 M3 coupe red
