Am I reading that I can get some brand of full synthetic oil at Wal- Mart in the 20-50 version or something where the top number is at least 40? If so, please give me the details as I've just quit buying Castrol dyno at Wal-Mart and have had to go to AutoZone to find Syntec, the full synthetic version of Castrol in the 20-50 weight. In the interim, I've fed the '99 M3 with Royal Purple @ roughly $7 / qt. Syntec is $6 at the local AutoZone. It's just a street machine after all! I was paying about $3 for Castrol 20-40 at Wal-Mart. Thanks, Bill Ft. Worth e38,39,M3

Sure. I buy Mobile1 15w50 in 5 quart jugs at Wal-Mart. It was ~$28 per jug last time (the 5w30 was on sale for $22, but not the 15w50). -- Adam Lazur

Everyone has their favorite and it's usually gonna take a lot > to > change their minds. Indeed. And a fair bit has changed with respect to oil since 1998 including many of the oils that Bob refers to... FWIW, here are my personal "oil rules for M-cars": > > Winter weather: BMW 5W40 synthetic or Mobil 1 10W30 (this is for street > only and assumes you're not going to do any track events or autocrosses in > the winter) Mobil 1 10W30 doesn't meet many manufacturer specifications, it certainly doesn't meet BMW's that is for sure. Mobil 1 0W40 does though and is a good quality synthetic. Well, good luck with that, BMW 5W40 synthetic is non-existent in the US IIRC, you can only get the 5W30 synthetic or the over-priced Castrol RS 10W60 synthetic. Spring, summer and early fall weather: BMW 5W40 synthetic or Mobil 1 15W50 > (again for street) Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15W50 doesn't meet BMW's specifications and isn't the same oil that Bob was recommending back in 1998. I would imagine that M1 EP 15W50 is a nice synthetic but I don't know much about it. For ANY track event: Mobil 1 15W50 -- that's right, just one. I won't > bore everyone with all the reasons I no longer use Valvoline, BMW, > Castrol, > Redline, Amsoil, Purple People Eater, or any other oil on the track. The > viscosity rating is simple -- anything thinner than 50-weight on the track > is gonna turn into hamster piss after a few hot runs. Just compare any > 40-weight oil at the end of a driver school session with Mobil 1 15W50 > after a similar session and you'll see what I mean. I don't agree that "anything thinner than 50-weight on the track is gonna turn into hamster piss after a few hot runs". This statement is based on an assumption that oil will shear down during track use. This may be true for some oil, but it isn't true for all oil and some oil can even thicken during use. I prefer shear stable personally. I believe the limited info I have seen about M1 EP 15W50 is that it does shear down towards a 40 wt in use. It all depends on the base oils and the viscosity modifiers used. The oil manufacturers are continually revising their formulations, certainly things have changed since 1998. Regards, Rich - never has used anything as thick as 15W50, even at the track 95 M3 - currently Red Line 10W40 (and this does see track use) 91 318is - currently Pentosin Pentosynth 5W40 90 325is - currently GC 0W30

Once Castrol won the court case allowing them to call Syntec a "full synthetic", M1 has dumbed down some of their synthetics. IIRC some of them are dino-based, so you need to be super diligent about reading the specs the oils carry.
