Pretty straightforward, but involves mucking with the exhaust system. Having an 02 socket helps (has a slot to accomodate the harness.) Hit them with Kroll or PB Blaster (after the exhaust has cooled) and let them sit for a few hours before going at it. >

#2. Rear Shock Mount Reinforcement plate -- finale! - from Kelvin

Was relatively straight forward, but the shock mounts are not accessed like my E30 was. I removed the rear speakers, and was trying to figure out how to remove the carpeting from inside the trunk. My mistake! All I really had to do was fold down the rear seats, pop off the side of the rear seats, remove 2 screws and wallow! Pull the carpet back! Pretty simple once you figure it out I guess. :-) I torqued more than 17.5lbs. Figure a tighter won't really hurt. I hope! :-\ Thanks everyone for your tips today! -kelvin

#3. Euro Headlights - from Russ Doucet

Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2006 09:24:53 -0400 From: "Russ Doucet" <russ@russdoucet.com> Subject: Euro Headlights My headlights are cloudy and partially broken, and I read everywhere that the upgrade to do for *more light* is to get Euro lights. So... I just opened the box for my new (used) Euro headlights, with no instructions, and no bulbs. Would appreciate a URL to a FAQ/HOWTO type document or else some advice... what sort of bulbs do these take? I see a second bulb socket below the main one in the inner light pot, I'm assuming for some sort of Daytime Running Lights? (I'm in Canada, so DRL are required by law for 1998) The power connector for the unit has 4 conductors, and the lights came with a 3 (loose) connector harness that connects to the two leads for the 9005 and th 9006 in the NA headlights, with the ground wire spliced together. I can see that the DRL bulb socket has a brown wire coming from it, I'm assuming this is the 4th connector in the socket (haven't broken out the multimeter yet). What does that hook up with in a North American car? Also, how do I open up the unit to replace that DRL bulb, there is no rear access to it but it looks as if the unit might disassemble from the front? Thanks in advance, sorry for the nooby questions... -Russ.

Regarding power loss, the car will run rich with a shot sensor and hence will be low on power and putting stress on the cats. A.L.

Like how to get to exactly where you want to go, now to check about running lights but also to install angel eyes, And, what's that all about? Is Um-nitza the place to go for the angel eyes for Euro Headlights? The car I have has no record of the lights. So, thanks for asking. Bill Ft. There's plenty o' reading to do in the archives, which can be reached here: http://www.bmw-m.net/search.htm Personally, I like to use Google to search. Here's a search for euro headlights, targeting www.bmw-m.net specifically: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=euro+headlights+site%3Abmw-m.net&btnG=Search Probably a couple of hours worth of reading that should get you up to speed. I ended up getting the Gen4 Depos. These are basically replicas for the ZKWs. The quality seems to be very very good. The depos were about ~$150 or so cheaper than the ZKWs. Keep in mind Hella and Bosch also made OE lights for the E36s as well. The most plentiful OE lights are the ZKWs. I ended up getting HIDs for my Euro lights as well. :-P The Euro lights use H1 for bulbs (though there are some "older" lights out there that use H7s supposedly). There is also a wedge bulb in there that is for the city light system. (I don't think it's bright enough for a DRL, it's 7watts I believe). Pretty straight forward swap. If you're handy with tools, it should only take you 45mins or so. If you're not, you could still knock it out in a couple of hours. My install took a tad longer because I had to find a place to mount the HID ballests. Let me know if you have anymore specific questions, and I'll try to answer them. -kelvin, who is finally able to give back to the community. =P

I know that this might ignite a war and all, but.... I'm going to be running thunderhill this coming friday. Is it ok for me to run 0w-30 German Castrol in my car? That is what is currently in my car. (changed about 1k miles ago). Previous owner ran 20w-50 and it burned oil like a mofo! Burning seems to be A LOT better now. (would suck to drain this oil and have to put another weight in) If this is too thin, can I just drop another quart of "xx-weight" into the motor to try to balance/mix it out? I'm right at the top of the dipstick right now, and I know for the track I'll have to run ..5-1.0quarts over anyhow. Thanks! -kelvin

E36s had H1 projector-beams through 1994. They had H7 free-form parabolic reflectors for the rest of their lifecycle. At least in Euro-land...we got stuck with the crappy 9005s reflectors here in the US. To add another data point, I've installed H7s (Bosch) on my M3, and have been very happy with them. Installed with Euro Silverstar bulbs, which are much brighter and have a more even pattern than the US lights. The H7s also display the sharp "hockey stick" cutoff pattern. KC Boyce '97 M3 Crew Cab
