Such things as Euro Headlights can be hard to come by in Canada, and from experience I know that I end up paying 1.5 to 2 times the list price to import things from the US after exchange, shipping, taxes, duty. So instead of paying perhaps $600 to $700 for a set from Bavauto, I bought a used (3 months) set on ebay from a Canadian location for $280, all in. Is there someplace else I could have gotten them? Probably is, but I had limited time to decide since I have one damaged light due to an accident and the body shop trip is Monday. Bulbs are cheap and easy to source, the harnesses were included, I just needed some instruction, and with this knowledgable community close by, I had no doubt that helpful information would be easy to come by. Which it was. -Russ.

#3. Next set of track sneakers? - from Steven Hazard

Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 15:06:48 -0400 From: "Steven Hazard" <98M3@comcast.net> Subject: Next set of track sneakers? Hey gang, I'm currently running on some 285/30/18 Yoko A048's as my DE tires. They are not much stickier than a street tire and are slower than the RA1's. So when I finally wear them out I'll have a dilemma. They only make the RA1's in the 275/35 size, so I see two other options. The Michelin Pilot Cup Sport's and the Goodyear Eagle RS's. I know some of you have had experience on the Cup Sports. Are they as grippy as the RA1's? How many track days you get from them? Anyone here run on the Eagle RS's? I heard that if your car is properly setup they last almost as long as the Toyo's but are stickier.... TIA, Steve Boston Chapter

Funny that you found the A048s only slightly stickier than street tires. I felt the same on the Elise but you'd be hard pressed to tell the Elise folks that the tires aren't that great. They also heat cycle to sh*t pretty darn quickly too. Good luck with your next set of shoes. I don't have any experience with the other two choices you mentioned, but I've never heard anything good about the PSCs from a BMW owner, although the P-car guys seem to really like them. Another choice you might consider, and I just checked their site to verify your sizing, is the Nitto NT01. I've heard good things and have a set on the way to try out myself (only in a considerably smaller size). ;) Jonathan L.

#10. RE: [E36M3] Yes, oil question again...track use.. - from Carl Stern

Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 16:38:39 -0600 From: Carl Stern <carl.stern@xilinx.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Yes, oil question again...track use.. Is this all a moot point? I know a lot of this is religion and opinion, and I'm no engine rebuilder, but from what I've observed is that folks are not destroying M3 engines no matter what oil they are using. It seems like the way to have catastrophic engine failure on an M3 is to do a money shift or have the oil pump nut come off. For the rest of us track day guys (and gals) I don't think we are really putting the engine to that point of stress where your choice of oil will haunt you. There do seem to be a fair share of VANOS problem, I wonder if some oil related issue can be correlated with that? Let's face it, these cars are 7-11 years old, driven hard or enthusiastically if not occasionally raced. I happily see that discussion of failed bottom ends is almost non-existant on this list. Perhaps this shows that the BMW engines are well built, durable units, and that modern 21st century quality engine oils, especially synthetics, are more than adequate. Carl

Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 17:47:00 -0500 From: "Jamie Howton" <jhowton@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Next set of track sneakers? I have a set of PSCs in 245/40R17 for my M3 mounted on ASA Wheels. I have run 6 track days on them and corded the outside edge of two front lefts despite running them at 6-8 PSI higher than is listed on the tirerack site (TR says 28-30 cold, I run 36-38 cold). They are pretty sticky, comparable to the Advan A032S that I had before them but don't seem to be lasting as long. I had 16 track days on the Yokos before I gave them the heave-ho. The PSCs seem to be pretty predictable as far as when they let go, turn in is good and they howl pretty loudly when they are approaching the limit of their adhesion. I have run them in fairly heavy rain at Road America (no standing water) and they were OK on the wet line. All in all, they are OK. I have friends that swear by them but I can't seem to get the pressures figured out. I also have a set of Hoosier R6 in 225/45R17 on Kosei K1 rims. They are almost as wide as the PSCs, weigh much less(some of that is due to the wheels) and are easily 2-3 seconds per lap faster. I don't know how long they will last, they currently have 6 heat cycles on them and they still seem to be getting faster. They have a trememdous amount of grip but are pricey and have a treadwear index of 40. I would recomend them if you can stomach the price, they make me feel like Superman on the track and they helped my TT times quite a bit.
