I too changed out everything except the overflow tank, and it disintegrated internally at about 125K. What I learned was that when you can't push the little bobber down and have it pop right back up freely, it's time to swap out the whole thing. I guess, if I were checking my coolant regularly, rather than observing evaporation at various times of the year and then topping off only then, maybe I'd have figured it out. What surprises me is, it takes years and years to bring even an errant supplier around to spec. Maybe the US mfrs dwindling sales dilemma will wake Euro mfrs to responding to the consumer more quickly. I think that the market we create, the secondary, tertiary and beyond really makes the reputation for BMW. My sense of it is the majority of first time buyers don't bother themselves about the quality of plastic in BMW cooling systems. It won't happen on their watch. It's the non-original owners who have built the reputation for the marque extolling BMW's drive train and drivability experiences at the higher miles. We've been involved with the car at the 100, 150, 200, 250K marks and can authoritatively say what BMWs are like over the long term. So, we've also experienced BMW's design shortcomings. I wonder how many years this cooling system, plastic components, faulty formulation thing has been going on. Bill Ft. #3. RE: Lower control arms replacement--tips? - from Burgess, Kim L

Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2006 08:39:05 -0700 From: "Burgess, Kim L" <kim.l.burgess@boeing.com> Subject: RE: Lower control arms replacement--tips? I used a modestly large construction wrecking bar to apply (separating) force to the joint and gave the control arm at the joint a whack with 3 lb copper-head hammer. Took a couple of swings but things popped loose. I left the nuts on the last portion of threads of the ball-joint shafts so things did not fly apart. I used silicone spray liberally applied to the control arm and the lolly-pop/bushing and drove it home with a 3 lb dead-blow hammer. The control arm was simply placed on the ground/driveway asphalt surface on edge with bushing boss facing up. I placed the lolly-pop on the CA boss and got them started on then used a deep socket that fit over the control arm boss to seat them. I had a local shop press new bushing into new lolly-pops. I understand it can be accomplished at home with a large vise and some patience. As a test (I had new control arm and new lolly-pops/bushings) I use a two jaw puller (front wheel bearing puller from Sears) and the same silicone spray and was able to pull the old LP/Bushings off the old control arms. KLB -------------------- 1 -------------------- Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2006 11:21:29 -0700 (PDT) From: "j. helffrich" <girolamous@yahoo.com> Hi All, I have a pair of LCA's to replace on my 97 M3 sedan, and I got stuck. Went through the rear bushing unbolting and the subframe ball joint disconnect to the strut disconnect with no problems, I just couldn't get the last ball joint to let go,and didn't have much room to hammer with. Is there a trick to this, like steering the car to the side first? I'm also replacing the control arm bushings with stock M3 (non-offset rubber) type, and wondered if the holes need to be aligned in a certain way? Are there newer (maybe E46) bushings which are less prone to deterioration that I should look for instead? I know that there is at least one recipe for sticking the new one on the control arm, rather than using BMW lubricant> IIRC, one possibility is Windex--is that right? Thanks in advance, Jerry Helffrich

Funny that you found the A048s only slightly stickier than street tires. I felt the same on the Elise but you'd be hard pressed to tell the Elise folks that the tires aren't that great. They also heat cycle to sh*t pretty darn quickly too. Good luck with your next set of shoes. Chester

If anyone wants to see pics email me off list. The car looks awesome...... You use four E46 front fenders for the parts. Those get hacked for their fender flares and then you trust a good body work dude to do the rest. Mike Noonan did the work to my car. I trust him...He fixes all of Will Turners cars after each event. He's in Malden, MA and loves P cars & BMW's and is a great driver/instructor as well.
