#1. E36 Clarion radio with bad reception - from jakeadavis@comcast.net

Is there a way to add one that WORKS? I have purchased an after-market one that is not working well at all. I heard that one of the other BMW's uses an antenna in the bumper?>> I can think of two other possibilities. It may be that the antenna booster amp is not getting power (or is defective). http://member.rivernet.com.au/btaylor/BMWText/technical/AntennaReceptionE36.html It could also be the connector on the end of the antenna cable that plugs into the radio. There is a service bulletin (TSB) on this connector (can't find it right now) regarding possible damage to the connector from excessive bending. It shows how to replace the connector. It used to be on Suzy's site, but BMW made her take them down (way long time ago). You might enquire of a friendly guy in the local dealers service department. Jake Davis

My wife had a (left) knee operation, so we had to replace her '01 525i 5-speed with an automatic ('03 525i). So I put the '01 525i up for sale (http://rides.webshots.com/album/553868851mtQUQm), but so far no one seems to want a 5-series with a manual transmission. I do like the car, so I might be willing to part with my E36 M3 instead. The car is dead stock (except for replacement of the lux grill slats with basic honeycomb insert). A few details: '97 M3, 140K (approx), lux package, factory spoiler, good Pilot Sports on M-Contours, staggered wheel setup. No mods, no CD- just your basic (but with a beautiful lux interior) M3. This car is a daily driver and is not perfect- some paint chipping at the nose, usual E36 maladies such as dim radio display (who needs a radio with that engine), windows that don't always go all the way up on one-touch (but do go up if you hold the switch a couple of seconds). But it is a good solid car and of course is a blast to drive. I am the second owner- purchased in 1999 with 48K miles. No racing or even autocrossing. Good candidate for upgrades/mods. I'd take $9100 for it. (RI) Of course you can buy the 5-er for $15,100, and then I can keep my M3! There have been several reports amoung club members here is Seattle as well. Im happy with mine but not everybody has joy! The leaker on my wifes car displayed just a faint hairline inclusion that leaked. Your T-stat has its own O-ring that seals against the T-stat housing plus the orange 'thingie' seal correct? KLB -------------------- 3 -------------------- Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2006 12:38:59 -0700 From: "Scott" <stiles_s@hotmail.com> Subject: It just keeps leakin' -- now aluminum thermo housing? Thanks to help from this list, I completed stage 2 of my cooling system refresh a couple weeks ago. I replaced what I thought was a leaky overflow tank with much cussing and spitting (because I suck at bmws :) ). Refresher: stage1 was hoses, radiator, thermostat and aluminum housing. Well, it's still leaking. In fact, now that other exit routes for coolant are plugged, it appears that it's finding new ways to daylight. I had a bit of coolant splattered around in the engine bay, and think I've tracked it to a seeping thermostat housing. I can see caked blue coolant around the perimeter of the housing, and a little puddle where the top of the housing is indented for the top bolt. - housing was torqued to spec - I used the o-rings provided -- a new paper gasket was not provided so one wasn't installed So, I've been doing a bit o' research on bimmerforums and it seems that folks are having issues w/these alu housings leaking. My questions are: - what's the general wisdom on the list re:these aluminum housings? Junk? Recommend the factory composite unit? Based on the current state, should i: - throw away the alu one and go OEM? - remove the alu one, install a paper gasket, maybe some form-a-gasket, and try to seal the sucker up? - just let it leak :) Thanks much, as always. Scott Oh, PS. The car still has the original water pump in it at 90k miles. No signs of leak, play or noise. Since I'm in the general vicinity, do people recommend replacing this at the same time I'm screwing w/the thermostat, or should I wait for signs of failure (which I'm guessing will be about a month from the time I fix the thermostat housing :) )

#4. Check engine codes evap purge canister P0455 - from j. helffrich

I get a MIL indicator after about 20 minutes of driving that says Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor Leak (Gross Leak). Seems to happen while the car is idling, because the engine load is near 0% when it happens, or maybe this is just chance. Could this be a cracked hose, and if so where would I look? Thanks, Jerry Helffrich

Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2006 23:08:02 -0400 From: Jay Kenty <jaykenty@cox.net> Subject: Update: Anyone Interested in my '97 M3? Original post follows- I wrote the original message in a hurry and left out a few key pieces of info! Additional info: This is actually the very car in the Classified Ads section banner on the Boston BMW CCA website (http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/bimmer/classified.aspx). The wheels in that picture are extra 16" snows- also will be for sale separately. My daughter did the banners for the web site, and we used this car for the pic. The car is a coupe. 5-speed. Silver/black interior. The only issue is a small bit of rust under the front right hood seam- I've held it in check with lots of motor oil brushed in from below. Some day it will need a new hood or some good body shop work. Roof was repainted a couple years ago when I got a new windshield and noticed a bit of rust under the rubber seal. Great job and no other apparent problems. Other details? Let's see- dealer serviced, new radiator about 20K ago, no dings, no other problems, and no accidents. The car is in R.I. (near Boston for those of you who live west of New England :)) If you have specific questions, ask, and I'll answer. Jay > I LOVE this car, but I have one extra BMW. Here's the background. I've also heard of the rubber seal for the gas cap going bad (Jim was that you?) which can be bought independently of the cap itself (~$5 I think). And if you've played with anything in the engine compartment in the last few days, check to make sure you didn't crack a hose that was ready to break to the evap canister under the intake manifold or otherwise knock something loose. I appeared logically sealed to me when I installed it, though I was a bit surprised that it didn't also have a "paper" gasket. I think mine's the Ronak. Looks like I'm going to go shopping for a new one, and maybe some nice hose clamps to go along with it. Does anyone have any recommendations for the alignment specs? Or should I just have the alignment guy go with the "factory" specs or should I "tweak" it a little bit? This is for my '95 M3. 17x7.5 all around. The car is mainly a street car with 1-2 HPDE a year. Any tips or input is greatly appreciated! Thanks -kelvin

You can only adjust toe in front and toe and camber in the rear. I would ask them to use the stock settings since most of your driving is done on the street. -- Jamie Howton 2006 M Roadster 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

There are two brands out there, Ronak and Ronal as I recall and I don't recall which is the non-leaker my car. Funny this topic should appear as I had my car to the Dealer earlier this week to replace the aluminum housing I had installed last year. Though it really never leaked, I kept seeing crusty coolant on the housing near where the T-stat area. Started cleaning it off and next day it's back. So I figured it was a hair-line crack. I did not want to be driving around and have a total failure so I had it replaced with the OEM plastic housing. IMHO, these alum housing are a piece of crap (mine was Ronal for what's it worth), manufactured in Indonesia I believe. The casting was only so-so, but good enough to install and not have leaking around the gasket. After removal, I looked inside and did not see any crack, so it must be just porous enough in one spot to force coolant through the wall and dry to form a "patch". Bottomline, I won't be buying this part again. regards, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 2005 Philly Region BSP Champion Sponsored by WCC, JT-Designs, & Rogue Engineering ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL.
