Other solutions are to find a nice fat washer or two and pound them in between the shield and the cat with a hammer and drift punch. You can also run a big screw in between the shield and cat. Ghetto-fabulous solutions, but effective. An AA track pipe will fix it too. ;-) -----Original Message----- From: david kroth [mailto:david_kroth@yahoo.com] Anyone have a solution for noisy exhaust shields? #6. New little car and 1-series BMW diesel - from Stefano G

Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2006 16:53:05 -0400 (EDT) From: "Stefano G" <stefanoale@excite.com> Subject: New little car and 1-series BMW diesel The M3 has 105K+ miles and is a 15+ year old platform design. Given how stupidly people drive on the street these days (I see people running red lights and cut each other off daily) and since I keep my fast driving for the track, I'm looking into a new vehicle to replace my fiance 97 civic hatch. Candidates are vw Rabbit 07, Mazda3 '07 hatch, or Honda Fit '07 (yes she is a big fan of hatches). I am a big believer of active safety (what makes you avoid an accident, the M3 still has lots of this) but when the accident is unavoidable, passive safety is all you got ( e36 m3 not so good). I have done lots of research on these vehicles and as far as overall safety: 1st Rabbit (3000lb, ABS, ESP, EBD, LSD?!?, 6 airbags, iihs.org silver medal), 2nd Mazda3 (3000lb, ABS, ESP, EBD, 6 airbags, iihs.org not as good as vw but more fun and higher mpg) 3rd fit (2400lb, ABS, 6 airbags, decent ratings from nhtsa.gov, euroncap.com and great mpg ). They all have decent moves but what I like about the go-kart Fit (light) hurts her safety rating. On the other hand forums talk about vw's not being very reliable… I'd like to drive the M3 for track/autoX events and one of these 3 as daily driver. Provided I still have the M3 for fun what would you get that meets these requirements (prioritized)? -Safe -Hatch -MPG -Reliable -Fun to drive -<$20K If BMW had a 1-series diesel (150hp+) for about ~$25k I would be getting one of those in a heartbeat? Anyone know if it's going to be offered in '08? Many manufacturers will offer diesel version once they can meet the new '07 US requirements. She's 22 years old, just graduated and working first job at law firm (now if she'd just move out!). The Wabbit is impressive. 6-speed auto, very torquey 2.5 liter, and fun to drive. Tranny is perfect and sport mode works great. Stock tires and wheels suck (standard option). Loose the Conti tires, use the wheels (rims) for snows and get a good set of 17's with good rubber. Brakes are excellent. Drivers aids appear to work well. Mileage is ho-hum (30MPG), but engine is pretty spunky to say the least so it lends itself to a heavy foot. Interior is roomy, much larger than our E36's especially in the back. Visibility is good. All the active/passive safety features were attractive. Most attractive was the price. Got into it for under $16K and I can't imagine VW is making any money at that price. She's only got a couple thousand on it, but so far things look good and I don't think we could have gotten a better car for the money anywhere. #16. FS: [E36M3] Two Sets of 18x8.5 Wheels for Sale: Set of (4) BBS RGR, Set of (5) SSR Comp Silver (each with good tires) - from Dave Flogaus
Top
Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2006 22:56:53 -0400 From: "Dave Flogaus" <dave-m3fan@comcast.net> Subject: FS: [E36M3] Two Sets of 18x8.5 Wheels for Sale: Set of (4) BBS RGR, Set of (5) SSR Comp Silver (each with good tires) Hello, gang... Long note about 2 sets of great wheels and tires. I've settled on my two sets (total of 8) BBS track wheels that I have on my 95 LWT. These cover my needs. ---------------------------------------------------- Last year, in addition to my LWT, I had a high mileage "stocker" M3, for which I had acquired a nice set of 4 forged BBS RGRs in diamond black. They don't fit over my Brembos on the LWT, so they need to go. BBS RGR SET: Diamond Black Finish with Black Finished Interior Qty: 4 Size: 18" X 8.5" Bolt Pattern: 5x120 (E36 M3 Hub, E30, E46 compatible, I believe) Offset: ET 38 Very Good Condition: ALL. Straight and true. These look awesome. Plenty of hi-res pictures available. BBS Center Caps Included. Currently wearing 245/35/18 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 Tires ~ Approximately 50% tread depth remaining. These 4 same-size wheels fit on any unmodified E36 M3. These DO NOT fit my particular M3, because of its oversize brakes. Bummer. A set of same-size non-staggered wheels & tires makes for extended tire life with easy rotation. These likely fit E46 M3 (and other cars as well) but I can not personally verify. Philly area test fittings available. Current cost from Tire Rack: Wheels: 779 x 4 = 3116 Tires: 215 x 4 = 860 Original Total: 3976.00 Asking $2,000.00 complete for the set of 4... Any interest? Please let me know. ------------------------------------------------------ SSR COMP SET: Beautiful Silver Finish Qty: 5 Size: 18" X 8.5" Bolt Pattern: 5x120 (E36 M3 Hub, E30, E46 compatible, I believe) Offset: ET 42 Near perfect condition... ALL. Plenty of pictures available. SSR Center Hub caps Included. Currently wearing 245/40/18 Kumho ECSTA MX Tires ~ Approximately 1,500 road miles on 4 wheels/tires, 5th spare NEVER driven on. (Still a sticker tire). These fit on my E36 M3 Lightweight, which has a modified suspension and big front brakes. My further research has confirmed that this set of SSRs will fit on a stock suspension E36 M3 with the use of a slight 5 mm spacer and use of wheel studs or slightly longer lug bolts. This setup does clear Brembo competition style Front brakes. These fit rear with no spacers, should clear OE rear suspension. These likely fit E46 M3 (and other cars as well) but I can not verify with any certainty. Philly area test fittings available. Original cost from Tire Rack: Wheel: 449 x 5 = 2245 Tires: 163 x 5 = 815 Original Total Retail Cost: 3060.00 Asking $2,250 complete for this near perfect set of 5... -------------------------------------------------------- For pictures of both the SSR Comps or the BBS RGR wheels, please click on the following link: http://picasaweb.google.com/davem3fan Prefer not to ship, but I will for any serious buyer (who respects nice wheels) and doesn't insist on make insulting offers (like those I got on eBay).
