Short shifter isn't going to fix this. It's likely the shift detent problem. ZF have a repair kit for this: http://www.zf-group.com/pdf/S531.pdf Scroll down to "S5-31". I don't know if BMW can source this for you or if you'll have to get it through anther channel. There was a Roundel article outlining this problem/ fix back in 2003 (???). It's been posted here before but I don't have a reference to it. I have driven hundreds of E36 M3's and this one is by far the sloppiest. I can find no "gate" between 3rd and 5th gears and am constantly going from 2nd to 5th gear by mistake. Question: Will an aftermarket short shifter kit solve this problem or do I need to replace other shifter components as well? Is sloppiness limited strictly to shifter components or could I potentially have a transmission problem as well? Thanks, Hunt Hodgetts

Best bet would be to buy a short shift kit, RE, or UUC are both good ones. I've used both in my car. I think it was heading in that direction. Just a couple weeks ago I installed the Rogue Engineering Octane SSK. Wow, what a difference. Ben had me install the joint connector piece close to the tranny as well. I would highly recommend this kit. I had the Dealer do the install and all the mechanics wanted a lot drive-around. They had nothing but kudos for the kit. Good luck, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA 2005 Philly Region BSP Champion

Could anyone send me that ..pdf file please (the 5th gear shift detent repair article by Blanton). Thanks, Carlos 98 M3

I developed the vague 3/5 gate (only when cold thus far) after I installed the newest UUC SSK. I love the SSK but, in my case, it seemed to bring out this particular weaknes in my tranny. I've read others make this observation as well after installing an SSK. Evan --------------------------------- Get your email and see which of your friends are online - Right on the new Yahoo.com

Dat: I was in your unfortunate position about 3 months ago, when I did my full pad/rotors/SS lines/bleed. Without the help one of my gearhead neighbors, I would not have been able to do the job. We used an old-style bender and two pieces of galvanized steel pipe - 1" and a 2". It's also a very tricky bugger. You're best bet is to constantly compare the original with the one you're bending, so you get all the little nuances correct. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'll encourage you - It *CAN* be done.. Just be patient.
