#2. Strut tower reinforcements - front and rear - from Bill Sharp

Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2006 17:35:21 -0600 From: Bill Sharp <M3@cueframe.us> Subject: Strut tower reinforcements - front and rear OK, I'm a slow learner but having admitted this one shortcoming . . . We've just purchased our M3 a couple of months ago and are getting it organized for street only use. I've ordered a Sparco strut brace and the X brace for underneath. Now I'm wary of putting the strut brace on before putting in the reinforcement plates, front and rear. Is everyone saying that any e36 (ours is a '99 and completely stock other than the in and out Dinan things) needs these strut tower reinforcing plates? Shudder, are you also saying the rears need them too? If so, let me just ask to be clear in my mind: 1. Can I just loosen the nuts from the studs in the front towers, let the whole thing go down until the studs are clear from the tower and slip the reinforcement ring in without compressing the spring? 2. What do I need to do in the rear? Isn't this operation in the back a welding thing? Do I also need to order a brace for the rear for insurance? Thanks for bringing this up and discussing it. I too was unaware of this problem. Actually, I'd heard it only occurred occasionally with a lot of beating, ie. Xcrossing or racing. I thank all of you for discussing this. Best, Bill Ft. Worth e36, 38, 39

Are you sure you're gonna have enough room though? :) I'll second Gary's comments below. I'm not sure if you realize it yet, but your amount of free time (and free money) just took a big hit. The house looks great - large, very open, high ceilings, lots of windows. We can compare gas bills this winter. :) Enjoy that new garage. It's my favorite room, and the only one I have control of. I see a lot of furniture shopping in your future. #10. RE: [E36M3] Strut tower reinforcements - front and rear - from Paul Andrews

Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2006 19:38:44 -0500 From: "Paul Andrews" <emosound@verizon.net> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Strut tower reinforcements - front and rear If your M3 is a 99, it should have the front plates already. My 98 M3/4 does. In the rear, start with the upper shock mount from Rogue or Ground control. http://www.ground-control-store.com/products/description.php/II=7/CA=9 http://www.rogueengineering.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_C ode=RSM&Category_Code=S If your rear shock pickup point is already cracked, a stronger sheet metal piece (from BMW) can be welded in. In my opinion, a shock tower brace for the rear is optional because that point does not take lateral load like the front tower, and a bar doesn't brace against up and down motion. Best, Bill
