There is something to be said about the M5 and M6.... some of the styling is a slight bit drab _looking_, but in person, you honestly do feel a real... presence. The sheer size of the wheels and fender arches and =-O those BRAKES... just give you a sense of muscle, a real tension and feeling of performance. Then you think of the full 5 liters, 10 cans of gasoline-drinking firestorm under the hood. It is an awe-ful experience (no pun intended) :-P Brian

It does sound like a bad heater valve, but I guess it could also be a bad or disconnected actuating motor or flap problem. The heater valve is a bit of a pain to access, probably even more so on an OBDII car... not to mention it's a bit expensive just to throw the part at it. I think to test the situation, to be sure, (I'm assuming a lot here, but this would probably work) you could pull the center console and remove the heater box cover and see if the heater core is hot after running a bit with the controls set to full warm and the blower off. It should be plenty hot with no air blowing past it if the valve is operating properly (assuming here, of course, that the valve will open fully as long as the temp controls are set to full hot). In this case, it would probably be a bad actuating motor or broken/stuck flap problem. This seems a prime situation to apply Ockham's razor... This probably didn't help at all, but here's where I hope someone more experienced can chime in. Brian

The M50 motors are a bit top heavy. I had a three point stand that worked fine with an M20, but once I used it for an M50 it was a bit tippy. > > From: <bnmhead-bmw@yahoo.com> > Date: 2006/11/08 Wed PM 05:48:27 EST > To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> > Subject: [E36M3] engine stand > > Date: Wed, 8 Nov 2006 14:44:51 -0800 (PST) > From: <bnmhead-bmw@yahoo.com> > Subject: engine stand > > I need to buy an engine stand, does anyone have suggestions on what to consider when buying one, or can recommend one? I'm guessing Harbor Freight or Northern Supply has one that's adequate for my needs, but I've never had one before and would prefer to get the "right" one the first time. > > Thanks! > > > ************************************************* > Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: > > Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com > Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com > Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com > Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com > Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com > Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com > > DIGEST INFORMATION: > http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm > ************************************************* > > >

After that, all you need is a hex wrench to move the tensioner. I changed mine when I replaced the water pump. The whole operation including pump and thermostat is less than 2 hours. However, the main belt CAN be removed/replaced withOUT removing the fan. It's just less easy. But there is room between the radiator & fan to slide the belt past. Before I had the tools for removing the fan (big wrench and water pump holder), I did it this way several times. My problem is I can never remember how the tread the new one on :-) Luckily there's a picture in the Bentley manual. Or I can look at the other E36 :-) Good luck, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP

Date: Thu, 9 Nov 2006 09:19:52 -0800 From: "Peter Loron" <peterloron@gmail.com> Subject: OBD-II software for diagnostics: which one? I'm in the market for a ODB-II diagnostic package. I've been looking at several, and am trying to get some feedback on them. I'm interested in using it with my M3, but also with some other vehicles so support of multiple protocols is important. The ones I've been looking at so far are: 1. AutoTap - http://www.autotap.com/product_famil...&TrailType=Top<http://www.autotap.com/product_family.asp?FamilyId=260&Trail=36&TrailType=Top> 2. Alex Pepper's tool - http://www.obd-2.com/ 3. ElmScan5 - http://scantool.net/products/product...products_id=32 4. AutoEnginuity - http://www.autoenginuity.com/ The AutoEnginuity is the current front runner, but I'm after feedback. Anybody have experience with any they'd like to share? Thanks! Pete 98 M3/4
