Remove it carefully as they do break. You'll need a 8mm hex for the tensioner. However, the main belt CAN be removed/replaced withOUT removing the fan. It's just less easy. But there is room between the radiator & fan to slide the belt past. Before I had the tools for removing the fan (big wrench and water pump holder), I did it this way several times. My problem is I can never remember how the tread the new one on :-) Luckily there's a picture in the Bentley manual. My fading memory tells me it was the 98+ models. Car in question is a 3/96 M3. Secondly is there a prevention/precaution for diff bolts snapping out? I had this happen to my 98 a while back. Its very abrupt and changed the camber right off the bat. Last but not least, did the 96 models include the front strut tower re-enforcement plates? And they looked like they were done at the factory.. So perhaps only the early 95's did not have them, and perhaps some of the later cars were missed.. The display mode is called up by pressing the "AUTO" and "REAR DEFOGGER" buttons simultaneously. 12 displays are available and you can toggle through them by pressing the fan rocker switch.
