I am not saying they should be done at 100k as part of routine maintenance, but listen to what your car is telling you. Hopefully 6 new coils fixes that and the CE errors. ted

I too would like to understand this coil replacement thing a little bit better. My car has just a slight hiccup at idle that sounds very much like an ignition miss-fire but all of the coils test fine and the plugs are new. I understand that it is possible a coil can pass a static test and still be bad when temp changes or voltage is applied. (an Oscilloscope would be needed to see this breakdown but how many of us have one sitting on our workbenches?) Any EE types have an opinion on this coil issue? Do our M3's normally have a random occasional miss at idle? Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2006 18:15:26 -0600 From: "Gary" <probikeguy@probikeusa.com> Subject: How much is my old S50 worth?? So. I am gonna sell the old S50 I took out of my 95 when I put the S52 in has 120k on it and as per the typical 95 has lifter noise. Could use new lifters other than that it ran like a champ strong and never used any oil had synthetic in it its entire life from he records I found with the car. Never tracked just a street motor. I was thinking it was worth 3000-3500...since it needs lifters. I need new parts for the S52....more boost and safer compression are calling for my motor. Have a leaky head gasket figure might as well do a full rebuild on it! Thank you, Gary Gray Pro Bike www.probikeusa.com

Do you have PayPal? ;-) In May 2005, I paid $2500 for my replacement S50 after I money-shifted my 95 M3. That was a great deal tho since I bought it from a buddy who owns a salvage yard. You should have no problem getting at least $2900 for it. Has it always had the slight hiccup? - I vaguely remember 14 years ago when I bought my M3 I complained that the M3 idled rougher than my I6 Supra motor did (an 85) and rougher than my then girlfriend's 325is. Cam aggressiveness has an effect on idle smoothness. You should sit in my car now - well it idles at 1500 rpm, anything lower than that and it won't run. But that's what I get for putting Hell my CTS-V has a very lumpy idle compared to the 540. If it's a very slight roughness it could just be normal if it's always been there. If it's new then I'd worry about the coils. Hey James, From one EE to another, do you have any solid information to suggest this was more than just a coincidence? I've heard this before and it just doesn't seem logical to me - perhaps I'm giving the engineers at Bosch or Siemens way too much credit but I would think it ludicrous to design a system where one relatively inexpensive component's failure can take out a much more complex and expensive component. I've personally had some dealings with BMW's quality department and they absolutely will not allow anything resembling reliability this questionable - at least with our components. If anyone else has hard evidence that this is a cause and effect situation, I'd like to hear it. I'm currently running all original coils in my '93 325 JP car with 130K miles on them - I had no intention of replacing them until they fail. If there is not hard evidence, perhaps a statistical approach would help. Anybody else have a coil failure without frying their CPU? I know it could be model or CPU specific but I had one go bad in my '02 X5 - replaced it with no other issues. I drove it for a few days with it behaving intermittently. It's amazing how much smoother 6 cylinders are than 7 (when it's designed for 8).
