Because we live in the snow belt (DC area), she's decided that she wants an all-wheel-drive car, specifically we were looking at used E46 ix's. I was just curious about the overall reliability of the all-wheel-drive system on these vehicles, anyone here has any experience w/them? My climate control died and I then went through the capacitor replacement to fix it. Here are the symptoms I experienced Climate control headunit would periodically completely die. Goes black, no buttons work. Eventually the climate control failed completely, never coming to life at all. When that happened, the system apparently defaulted to blowing hot air in the footwells at full blast. Literally, my feet were getting roasted. I temporarily pulled the fuse for the blower motor which stopped the toasty feet. When I replaced the capacitor, the climate control headunit started working as normal. Restoring the pulled fuse restored the HVAC system to normal. At no point did I smell coolant in the cabin. Hope that helps, Andrej '97 M3 Johnny Lee wrote: > I have read about the climate control fix and having the car at over > 110K mikes, I figure it is the likely cause for the problem I am > seeing. I still have the old one so I > guess I could fix it when I have time, which will be never. :) In my case, it was quite clear that the AC compressor was running as well. I've had to fix mine twice a year, which amounts to pulling it, hitting each relevant terminal with a soldering iron for a moment and putting it back in the car. It seems to want to fail again when it starts getting really cold or really hot outside. If you directed some bright light at the display you could still see the display even though the backlight is off. This is in the case where hte unit started and then the display turned off. If you turned on the car with the unit already off, the display would then show nothing even with some other light added. Thanks, Mark

#11. [E36M3] Talk to me about Clutches/Lightweight Flywheels - from Dave DeBuhr

Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2006 16:18:10 -0800 From: "Dave DeBuhr" <debuhr@comcast.net> Subject: [E36M3] Talk to me about Clutches/Lightweight Flywheels My clutch is starting to slip a little bit. I'm trying to decide if I should replace it with another OEM M3 clutch or go to one of those fancy UUC/Rogue lightweight flywheel/M5 clutches. I've read about chatter. How bad is it? How is drivability? My wife drives the car so I don't want something that is challenging to drive fore a non-enthusiast. It is a street car that sees occasional track days. If the chatter/rattling is minimal, it isn't challenging to drive smoothly in traffic and it provides an improved driving experience, I'll probably go with the lightweight set up. Please educate me. :) Dave DeBuhr 98 M3/4
