Things are pretty stressful and tight in there -- I would recommend you use a quality tool. I have one that's either Hazet or Stahlwille -- works great. I have found some very decent deals for BMW tools on eBay, btw. When i changed the head gasket on my LWT 3 times in short order (bad gasket, my stupidity, third time's a charm), I slipped on the rearmost upper bolt once and damaged its head when tightening it. I was able to pound the "socket" (really a long extension with a built-on socket and catch circlip on it) back onto the bolt to finish tightening it, and later remove it, without problems. That's one tool I wouldn't skimp on. --Andrew Original Message: ----------------- From: Peter Loron peterloron@gmail.com Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2006 13:54:40 -0600 To: e36m3@bmw-m.net Subject: [E36M3] Head bolt tool...which one? Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2006 11:49:57 -0800 From: "Peter Loron" <peterloron@gmail.com> Subject: Head bolt tool...which one? In prep for my upcoming head R&R on my 98 M3, I've been collecting the needed tools. I can get the OE-type head bolt tool from a number of places (part 88 88 6 112 250), and often it's around $50. But I also see single sockets that are E12 like this one: http://www.zdmak.com/wbstore/main.asp?action=PROD&PROD=MK-3901FE12&CTMP=1 ...for much cheaper. Does anybody have some feedback on which one to go for? Saving 80% is pretty attractive if I can just use the small socket and an extension to do the job. It looks thin, but I don't know if it's thin enough to get around the cam cages... Does anybody have some feedback on which one to go for? You definitely want to go with the factory style tool. It has a clip on the socket which grasps the bolt head. This makes both assembly and disassembly much easier, since the bolts are at the bottom of deep holes with obstructed access. With a conventional tool you'd also risk the socket pulling off the extension and getting stuck at the bottom of the hole. The factory style tool incorporates its own extension. I don't recall paying quite that much for mine. Maybe $35? Neil Fort Wayne, IN 96 M3 - Bastard child 03 525iT - Sterling Grey Metallic 05 Mini - Cooper S with LSD

#3. K&N replacement for ITG foam on '95 Euro kit - from Jonathan Evans
Top
Date: Sun, 3 Dec 2006 15:06:12 -0500 From: "Jonathan Evans" <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: K&N replacement for ITG foam on '95 Euro kit I saw a post a few weeks back about cleaning and oiling the ITG filter that comes with the Conforti Euro HFM kit for the 95 and thought I would add a datapoint. My foam finally disentigrated and I replaced it with a tapered cone K&N filter. I do like the idea of a foam filter compared to the paper K&N, but for $35 and the availability of the cleaning kit convinced me to go with a K&N. Part number RU3130. Fits nicely. I had to rip the ITG foam filter off of it's metal venturi mount (well, I touched it and it fell off), cut a ring off it and used it as a reinforcing plate inside the fiber intake since the K&N mounts around the outside of the intake, not the inside like the ITG. I needed something of strength to clamp to inside the (carbon?) fiber intake pipe of the kit. Just another idea. Jonathan E. '95 M3

I attempted to install them today and ran into a big problem. How to remove the original headlights. Mainly the fastener on the outside, which I assume is what also holds the turnsignal in place. There's so little room to work in. Any helpful hints to removing it? Regards, Dan

There should be an opening back there where you can drop a screwdriver vertically in and pop a release tab. It's not very big, you won't be able to do it with your fingers. From what I remember, it's not all the way at the back of the headlight assembly, it's kinda halfway or 2/3rds of the way back. It may be helpful to take a flashlight and look down to see where this release tab is. Once you pop that tab, the turn signal should just come right out. And then you'll be able to access the last screw and get the headlights out. Make sure you have some kind of magnetic screwdriver for re-installing the screws. And a magnetic pickup tool in case you drop it down. Ask me how I know... Also, the Euro lights will only use 4 screws, not 5. The top edge of the US lights is held on by 3 screws, the euro's only 2. I am also open to including cash in the transaction, in addition to my car, if need be. So there it is. If anyone is interested, please let me know. Thanks for your time.
