Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2006 23:04:09 -0500 From: "Stan Shaw" <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Wanted: 3.2L M3 Core Motor I want to rebuild my 3.2L M3 motor, but would rather get started sooner than later, and currently there is no room in my garage to get the M3 in and pull the motor. Does anyone have a core motor in need of rebuilding they want to sell cheap? Alternatively, does anyone have a good motor they want to sell cheap? My intent is to club race in the stock class next year, so the motor needs to be stock per BMW CCA Club Racing specifications. Yes, I say I am going to club race it every year, but I am definitely more serious than I have been in the past as the M3 is no longer registered and definitely needs some work. Yes, I am cheap :-) Regards, Stan Shaw Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net Phone: (413) 599-0399 Fax: (413) 599-0421 Excell.Net Owner/Operator http://www.Excell.Net/ 928 Owners Club President http://www.928OC.org/ 928Racing.net Team Member http://www.928Racing.net/ "Liberty once lost is lost forever." - John Adams

The realoem.com prices are crudely based on an outdated euro based BMW AG price table which may or may not be similar to BMW NA list prices. That lower seat pad has a BMW list price of $58.75. You'll need a T45 bit socket to remove the > seatback > from the bottom frame (4X). No tricks and takes about 1hr. I had a friend's luxury seat in his '97 M3 break in a similar fashion (factory weld broke). I should have taken some pics of the weld before smoothing it out and cleaning it up but I didn't, it was a bit gnarly and penetration of the weld could have been better but it would hold. It would have been really good to have had him weld on the inside (which I also didn't take pics of before hand). Since he hadn't, I mixed up some JB Weld (don't laugh, the stuff works if used in the right fashion) and I worked it into the crack really well on the inside and smoothed it out. Sanded, primed and painted all of it. Here are a few pics: http://www.RDAutosport.com/CESeats/CESeat1s.jpg http://www.RDAutosport.com/CESeats/CESeat2s.jpg http://www.RDAutosport.com/CESeats/CESeat3s.jpg http://www.RDAutosport.com/CESeats/CESeat4s.jpg http://www.RDAutosport.com/CESeats/CESeat5s.jpg Similar to what David Kroth noted, the metal side bolsters had worn through the foam bolsters and were stressing the leather in spots. To be cheap, since my buddy didn't have much extra cash at the time, instead of buying new foam bolsters (which retail for around $110 IIRC for the luxury seats), I simply repaired them by cleaning up the foam holes, filling with replacement foam where needed or using foam adhesive to seal the crack, wrapping the repaired bolster in new seat 1/4" cushion and wrapping the metal bolsters with a canvas type material (like burlap) to prevent the metal supports from breaking through the foam again. I had a pretty well hot rodded out 89 Camaro that I used to do autox and open track events with that ran similar trap speeds. It had a fully hot rodded 355 cube small block with solid roller cam and etc. etc. Made ~360hp and 430ft-lbs of torque. And pushed a similar weight car to 13.1-13.2's on street tires and 12.8-9's on slicks in the 1/4mi at right around 106mph. Damn impressive BMW. If the handling isn't quite as crisp as the M3 seems like it could easily be cured with some very minor and cheap aftermarket suspension tuning from Dinan or TMS.....
