It's been about a year since then and still smooth as ice and silent. There's some small play but I don't think the bushings need replaced just yet on mine. Thanks, Mark

Doesn't matter, the piston can rotate within the caliper, they aren't intended to stay lined up. Regards, Rich

#4. Vanos fun for the holidays - from Matt Weimer

Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2006 06:30:11 -0800 (PST) From: Matt Weimer <mjweimer@yahoo.com> Subject: Vanos fun for the holidays Hello Group, I am in search of some facts to aid in the diagnosis of the nasty sounding Vanos in my '95 M3. Details: 112k miles, Redline 10W40, new primary tensioner (installed yesterday, newer style 081 p/n), totally stock otherwise. Symptom: At idle there is noise and vibration in the area of the Vanos unit, off idle the rattle gets more pronounced until ~3500 rpm where it quiets some. To me this sounds worse than the 'normal' Vanos rattle I have heard in many other E36's that make a little noise as the revs drop. Strangely, the symptoms seem to be more pronounced after changing to the Redline from the 15W40 dino oil the PO had been using. There are several posts in the archives regarding different oils and their effect on the Vanos rattle but that discussion seems to offer no clear results. What is the recommended path for troubleshooting the Vanos system? Has anyone successfully made an adapter for the oil fitting at the Vanos unit so the pressure tests can be performed? Any other tips, tricks, suggestions and experiences are appreciated. Matt Weimer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2006 20:50:34 +0000 From: docwyte@comcast.net Subject: WTB: E36 M3 4 door My journey into rice-ville was short lived. I just couldn't get comfortable in the car. So I'm once again looking for an E36 M3 sedan. Gotta be an all records, no accidents car. Gotta have a 5 speed manual. Gotta have heated front seats, really want fold down rear seats and the full obc as well. Gotta have cruise control. I'm ok with any color but yellow, and I'm not a huge fan of green. Prefer black leather interior. Mods ok. Lemme know what ya got!

Have you changed your serpentine belt tensioners and pulleys? With that kind of mileage they are sure to be loud and will confuse the issue of detecting the source of your noise. -- Jamie Howton 2006 M Roadster 2004 645Ci 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

The belts, tensioners and pulleys have all been changed within the past 250 miles so they can be ruled out. The water pump and fan clutch are also new so they can be ruled out as well.
