#3. Power steering refresh (& high pressure hose ?) - from L R

Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2006 12:54:38 -0800 (PST) From: L R <lhrc51@yahoo.com> Subject: Power steering refresh (& high pressure hose ?) I'm in planning to refresh the power steering system on the '95 M3. Instead of the high pressure hose that attaches to the steering pump, I'm running a normal rubber hose w/clamps which has been leaking. Is using the $200 hose the only way to avoid any leaks? I'm also planning to replace the ps carrier/canister, washers & belt, am I forgetting anything else? In November my original 9 year old radiator failed. Good thing I was only going 5 mph and close to home when it failed. I installed a new radiator, purchased from Bimmerworld as part of their cooling system overhaul kit. The replacement radiator was defective and leaked. The only problem was I purchased this kit 12/2004 to replace my factory installed radiator before it failed. It ended up lasting another 2 years. A call to Bimmerworld and a replacement was on its way. It pays to purchase from a list sponsor. On a side note, I also removed the ASC with a new Throttle Body hose from Bimmerworld. It seems to have more power now. Pasted below is my original email, offering details on the car and the price. It is not listed anywhere but here at this point. Due to life circumstances (2 kids in car seats now) and new job circumstances (moved into a role with quite a bit of highway travel and client entertaining), I am looking to move into a four door from my '95 M3. As much as I love my car, it is difficult having a coupe now. Some quick specs on my car: - Hellrot over black (luxury model) - Paint is very good, leather is very good - 73k miles - A few mods (AA intake, larger throttle body, AA track pipe, AA 3rd gen exhaust, AA short shift, Dinan strut bar) - No track time (1 auto-x) - Staggered M contours, Goodyear F1's with ~2k miles - BMW synthetic oil, Redline fluids otherwise - In exceptional condition - $15,500 Pics available upon request. What I've done on the M3 (and the previous 328is) was to simply add some padding in the lumbar area of the seat. I used carpet padding (non-compressible) and "simply" peeled back the seat back leather and inserted the padding. (I say "simply", but it's a bit involed and the hog-rings are a PITA if you don't have a set of hog-ring pliers. But it's do-able.) Sure enough, I ended up doing the head gasket and did the vanos while I was in there. Demons silenced. --Bill 96 M3

Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2006 17:00:18 +0000 From: jakeadavis@comcast.net Subject: Front Control Arms: Meyle full metal ball joint Ok, got the new Bav Auto catalog just after Xmas and did some reading. They've got the Meyle front control arms for the E36 chassis with the 'improved' full metal ball joints. However, they appear to be applicable to 318/325 only, not for M3. What's the difference (if there is one)? I know E30 M3 came with aluminum control arm for reduced unsprung weight, thought E36 M3 came with steel arm even though E30 arm is fittable. Jake Davis

The stock non-M E36 control arms have a replaceable (press in/out) outer ball joint surrounded by rubber. The M control arms have solidly mounted non-replaceable outer ball joints. Both control arms are steel. I believe there's a difference in geometry also. The non-M control arm bushings are different too - a lot more void space in the rubber. I suppose the benefit of the new Meyle arms is to end outer ball joint squirming in the rubber housing for non-M E36s. I think an alternative is to install M3 control arms? marty Chester Wong wrote: > AFAIK, the E36M3 control arms already have a full metal ball joint that is not > user replaceable.
