Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2007 18:49:24 -0500 From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> Subject: S4 comparison Folks, Some of your have owned or do own an S4 (docwhyte comes to mind). I am looking into both the B5 and the B6 S4s. Have owned five E36s and love them, however my M3 is now a race car and I drive an E46 328i as a daily driver. Long story short, my commutes are very boring.... Need a 4 door car and test drove both the S4s (what a HOOT) and plan on replacing the E46 soon. Any input/experience with service, reliability, parts cost etc? This car will hardly track but will be driven enthusiastically. How does it feel to the E36 M3 in terms of drivability, tossability etc? Since my right foot is still giving me a hard time ;) I didn't push the car hard, however I loved the torque. Ahmad

#8. RE: [E36M3] S4 comparison - from Alex Demsky

Date: Tue, 02 Jan 2007 19:10:51 -0500 From: "Alex Demsky" <hyper_m3@hotmail.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] S4 comparison I know you said s4 but Id like to chime in anyway. I have a mildly modified a4 with the 1.8 turbo. With a shortshifter, the 6speed feels slicker than any of the 3 kits Ive had in my M3 with much less slop too. Once you drive a quattro hard, anythying less just that. I feel way more confident in curves in my Audi than I do in the M3. The steering feel isnt anything like the M3 but you can blindfold me and put me on a wet track/street and the car will just GO where you point it. Youll find a similar comfort level interiorwise and might even find the Audi to be a little more to your liking. In terms of reliability, the B5 S4's had turbo problems and seal issues. Most new owners replace the turbo hoses with hi-po silicon aftermarket ones anyway. Upping the turbos to ko4's is also easily done reliably. The b6 S4 youre looking at simple NA, no turbos to worry about. Reliably the engine had less problems. Suspensionwise you might find the B5 to be slightly more nimble because of the weight but the b6 to be more surefooted. If youre influenced by styling as I am then Id say b6, its just so stealthy and solid looking. Plus theres way more rearseat room if you need to haul passengers. I actually fit a 7 foot ladder in my car with the seats folded down and the passenger seat all the way forward. I know it wasnt a full review on the S4's but I have driven both and have been in my 1.8turbo for almost 3 yrs. #9. Re: [E36M3] S4 comparison - from docwyte@comcast.net
Top
Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2007 00:21:19 +0000 From: docwyte@comcast.net Subject: Re: [E36M3] S4 comparison Ok, here we go. Bear in mind my '95 M3 had TCK coilovers, sways, AA supercharger etc. My S4 avant was stage 2+ (chip and turbo back exhaust), stoptechs, H&R coilovers, rear swaybar. I loved my M3, but when my daughter arrived, I wanted something I could put the whole family in. I ended up buying an S4 avant (read wagon) as I'd owned an A4 sedan in the past and it was hard to use all the available space because access to it wasn't great. (Ie, if you could get the package through the trunk opening or door openings, it'd fit, but you couldn't get it inside the car) Plus the avants were made in far smaller quantities, which helps with the abysmal Audi resell values. The S4 is best described as a GT car. It's a fabulous highway cruiser. It's quiet, tracks incredibly well, gets close to 30mpg (even modded like mine with over 325hp, 400ft lbs torque) and the interior is worlds better than the M3. Ergonomics are great, the seats are great, very high quality materials are used. Winter performance. One word, QUATTRO. The thing is the BOMB in the winter with snow tires and I live in Colorado and run up to the mtns regularly. I had 16" snows on the M3 and there's simply no comparison. Straight line performance, the S4 wins. Hard to beat twin turbos. Very easy and cheap to get 325hp+ and 400ft lbs torque+. After that you upgrade to factory RS4 turbos and can get 460hp, but that runs into some cash, as you have to pull the motor to replace the turbos. Handling the M3 is the clear winner, it's far more balanced and isn't nose heavy like the S4. Way more nimble and you can stuff more rubber underneath it too. Steering response between the two is similar. For a daily driver that you need to do everything, cart people around (back seats in both are similar in size, ie a bit tight), drive in the winter and take to an occasional DE or auto-x, the S4 is great. The M3 is a much better track car and a better 2.5 season car. If it came in a wagon, I would've bought it and dealt with the far worse winter capabilities... -------------- Original message -------------- From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> > Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2007 18:49:24 -0500 > From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" > Subject: S4 comparison > > > > Folks, > > Some of your have owned or do own an S4 (docwhyte comes to mind). My S4 has been great, I replaced a set of O2 sensors and that's been about it. The M3 needed 6 new coils, new DME, new vanos, etc, etc. The M3 is easier to work on, BMW planned things out better, much better access to parts. Parts on the S4 tend to be a bit more $$ and are definately harder to get at, as there's alot more stuff in the way on the B5 S4. The B6 S4 isn't nearly as moddable and isn't as fast as the B5 S4 as it's soooo easy to get stupid power from the B5. B6 S4 gets incredibly crappy gas mileage, I've heard around 14-16mpg in the city. Turbos on the B5 S4 can get cooked, esp on the '00's as they had smaller oil lines. If you chip the car, eventually the turbos will go. Some people have gotten 80-100k miles out of a set, others 40-50k. If they blow, you get the RS4 K04's, as the price difference is minimal and the K04's get you 460hp. Other than that, typical Audi stuff, interior light bulbs, control arm bushings, wheel bearings...
