#1. RE: [E36M3] S4 comparison - from Scott

Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2007 17:00:04 -0800 From: "Scott" <stiles_s@hotmail.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] S4 comparison We had 2 b5 s4s (1 avant, mildly modified, and 1 sedan), and my wife now drives a b6 S4 Avant Tip. Doc hit on most of the major issues, but here are a few more: 1) The v8 is amazing. Lots of power, revs forever. I personally prefer N/A power when I can get it. 2) Fuel economy sucks, though the Tip is actually significantly better than the manual tranny. On fuel economy alone, I wouldn't buy another S4. Our GX470 (truck) gets the same gas mileage as the S4. I'd head for a 2.0t A4 Sport if I had to drive one. Good straight line perf, lighter front end, arguably better handling. 3) The B6s chassis tuning is leaps and bounds ahead of the B5. I had a high end Stasis suspension on my B5 and was never quite right. The B6 is very good straight out of the box *for a nose heavy pig* 4) They're both nose heavy pigs 5) Steering feel on both the B5 and B6 is abysmal, and steering feel is one of the most important things I personally look for in my performance cars. Their virtual-axis steering seems to also render any steering feel virtual as well 6) don't kid yourself; backseat room in both the B5 and B6 really sucks. In fact, the B6 is a narrower car so width takes a hit. A child seat turns our B6 into a 2-3 person car -- the passenger seat is so far forward you can't put anybody in it. Note that rear seat room may be reduced in the S4 compared to the A4 due to the amazingly good Recaro seats in front... The new 335i bimmer has significantly more rear seat room. The "net" for me is that I find the B5 and B6 Audis incredibly, frustratingly dull to drive on a regular basis; regardless of power. I only drive my wife's B6 when I need to -- never for fun. I've owned 3 b5s (one A4, 2 S4s) and 1 b6. I doubt we'll own another. My S4 has been great, I replaced a set of O2 sensors and that's been about it. The M3 needed 6 new coils, new DME, new vanos, etc, etc. The M3 is easier to work on, BMW planned things out better, much better access to parts. Parts on the S4 tend to be a bit more $$ and are definately harder to get at, as there's alot more stuff in the way on the B5 S4. The B6 S4 isn't nearly as moddable and isn't as fast as the B5 S4 as it's soooo easy to get stupid power from the B5. B6 S4 gets incredibly crappy gas mileage, I've heard around 14-16mpg in the city. Turbos on the B5 S4 can get cooked, esp on the '00's as they had smaller oil lines. If you chip the car, eventually the turbos will go. Some people have gotten 80-100k miles out of a set, others 40-50k. If they blow, you get the RS4 K04's, as the price difference is minimal and the K04's get you 460hp. Other than that, typical Audi stuff, interior light bulbs, control arm bushings, wheel bearings... ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

#6. S4 comparison - from Robert Manger
Top
Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2007 09:13:12 -0500 From: "Robert Manger" <Robert_Manger@Mastercard.com> Subject: S4 comparison Hi Ahmad, here is my 2 cents. Haven driven the TT S4 with AWE upgrade kit(big power) and a 2005 S4 I would say that they are greats car to commute in. The problem with the TT cars are the turbos are of an old design and have a flaw regarding the oil passage as I recall and its not a question of if, but more of when you will cook the turbos(the reason the AWE upgrade was done on a friends car). The 2005 was a nice driver and has gobs of torque for the freeway and the reliability should be better since that V8 has been around in the A8 forever, although its very tight to work in that car. They are a heavy car and will understeer like a big pig if pushed hard, but if you are only going to commute you'll be fine. M3 content- even after driving both of them I still loved the feedback from my E36 M3 better. Hey Doc, how is that snow treating you in denver? going to be in the high 50's on the East coast ;-) Rob Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2007 18:49:24 -0500 From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> Subject: S4 comparison Folks, Some of your have owned or do own an S4 (docwhyte comes to mind). I am looking into both the B5 and the B6 S4s. Have owned five E36s and love them, however my M3 is now a race car and I drive an E46 328i as a daily driver. Long story short, my commutes are very boring.... Need a 4 door car and test drove both the S4s (what a HOOT) and plan on replacing the E46 soon. Any input/experience with service, reliability, parts cost etc? This car will hardly track but will be driven enthusiastically. How does it feel to the E36 M3 in terms of drivability, tossability etc? Since my right foot is still giving me a hard time ;) I didn't push the car hard, however I loved the torque. My 98 M3/4 does not (as far as I know) have an alarm or keyless entry system installed. I don't really care about an alarm, but I do want the lazy unlocker. I see that places like Bavauto have a system for ~$120. I see the "brain" modules from the BMW systems around sometimes, but most of them either don't have the fobs or the wiring harness. My research so far indicates that those can be expensive to get. Best bet is to just go with the 3rd party system? Any specific recommendations? Thanks. -Pete

I was in the same boat as you, wanted keyless entry but not necessarily anything more than that. I went with the autoloc keyless entry. Price was right, keyless entry and nothing else, just what I was looking for. I did have one issue with it when I first installed it. Even though they claimed the unit would double lock the car, when I installed the unit, it would not double lock the car. Lock it with the key, double locked. Lock with fob - not double locked. After calling and emailing them for a while, I found out what needed to be done to enable that feature. Not a hard thing to do, but it did necessitate pulling it out. Now that it's set up to work like it should, I would recommend it.
