Hmmm. I'd bet it is the alternator idler pulley, not the alternator. It's one of those, 'while you're in there' jobs. Might as well replace the a/c belt and tensioner pulley as well as the main belt and tensioner pulley. One could also look at the coolant system as a possible replacement candidate since you're there. When's the last time your radiator, expansion tank, thermostat, hoses, and coolant were changed? Hey, at least it isn't your alternator. Those are expensive... :-) Cheers, Kirk Lachman '95 M3 #21 I-stock (in pieces during off season rebuild)

I traded my 330 in for one when they first came out 2 years ago and it's been a blast. Felt better then the e39 M5 and was definitely more luxurious, comfortable, and a better daily driver than the e36 M or e46 330 I had. The torque is addictive from that big V8 and with 4 doors, fold down seats, nav and all the options it's great. I can actually get more stuff in it than my friends 545 as the 545's seats don't fold flat like in my AMG. It is another nose heavy pig (not quite as bad as the Audi though), but I fitted stickier tires & changed the alignment and it made a nice improvement. Has about the same amount of grip as my "trackified" e36, just with slower turn in (and a whole lot more comfy & luxurious). It's also so easy to drive this thing fast it gets into the "arrest me now zone" much easier than my BMW's have. M3's can't keep up unless they happen to get a jump or are modified. For me, it slotted in nicely between the e36 M3 and e39 M5 in terms of size. Now that I'm used to it, I'm actually toying with the idea of selling mine and getting a Z06 just because I don't really need 3 cars and a Z06 sounds rather tempting... -- Roger "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> wrote: > I will let the emotions subside and go test drive the cars again. You should be able to narrow down what is making the noise. I'd bet an idler pulley, personally. It seems a little bit louder when the engine is cold, but it could just be my ears tricking me. It sounds a little like the belts are slipping very slightly, but as the belts are only a year old and they feel tight, I really doubt it. Anyway, anyone ever experienced this noise? Is this noise a common indicator of a failing alternator? If it is my alternator, I wanted to confirm that the 140A and 80A Bosch alternators were interchangeable without any modifications anything. Or perhaps my PS pump...? hrm... I don't really know how to diagnose this one for sure.. Brian build 8/95 -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2007 08:07:32 -0600 From: scrowl@austin.rr.com Subject: Re: whiney squeak I thought I had bad alternator bearings, too. I used a stethoscope (ok, a socket extension pressed to my ear) to hear the sound from the alternator as the rpms changed. I was sure this isolated it from a tensioner pulley. It turned out to be an idler pulley *attached* to the alternator. When I took the belt off and spun the pulley, it whined. I pulled the seals cleaned mine and repacked them with synthetic grease, but one of them is starting to make noise again. I guess once they are worn the clearances get to great and they just make noise. I'll replace them soon. They can be found locally and on-line for less than $20 each (for the on-eccentric mount style.) You can see them here: http://snipurl.com/16jgm . I have no experience with this jack or these stands but it looks like a good deal because if you search by the model number you find that the jack is the fast-pump race one that sells for $169.99 alone http://snipurl.com/16ji6 . No affiliation with Northern Tool but thought this might help someone out. -Wayne
