Fabulous setup for short people – I’m sure it fit Kathy Lyle perfectly. 2 problems for American-sized males (I’m 6’2” 210 lbs): 1) Harness holes are way too low and could snap your spine in a nasty collision, 2) Helmet lays against the roof, above the cage – obvious problem. And it was a wee bit, um, snug. In Jan 2005 I decided that a HANS and safer seating position were a good investment. HMS was very patient with me. I tried a couple of shells that simply wouldn’t fit into an E36 with an interior. They took them back – one even had a scratch on it from my cage. What worked was the very nice VAC mounts with the Recaro Profi seat (don’t remember if it’s SPG or XL). I cut away about ˝” of the left lip to fit around the left side cage piece – I have a letter from Recaro saying that this wouldn’t affect the integrity of the seat structure in any way. The seat cover slides right over it so you can’t see my ugly work. Joe Marko even took the time to personally inspect my setup at WGI and offer a few no-cost tweaks in the interest of safety. Harnesses now line up perfectly for the HANS and my helmet is at least 1” below the roof. And it’s very comfortable even on the 6-hour drive to VIR (Yes, drive. I’m a Stock-class purist. Who has nowhere to store a trailer). Hope this helps. Dave Hogg #20 IS

Yeah, well I was going to get it but then decided that I needed coilovers worse so the lift took the form of those coilovers I was trying to catch you with at MO last fall. Then I was going to get the lift this winter but now have decided that I need a HANS, six point harnesses and new seats worse so the lift has taken the form of that safety equipment. Not sure how many more things that lift can take the shape of before I actually see it in my garage! Now I understand what you mean by the sub belts likely being too long, thanks. I'll file that info away and likely need it in a week or so when doing the install. That sub belt mount for the Boxster would make our lives so much easier, I'd think there'd be more of a demand for something like that for the e-36 than a Boxster? Umm no: structural... > I'm not clear on what you mean by removing a section of the sub and > substituting different snap brackets? Have a look at the Profi-III-6 subs in this enlarged image: <http://www.hmsmotorsport.com/imgView.php?img=ximg/1619/Profi_III_6.jpg> With a low seat you'll likely find that the total length of the Schroth sub straps is too long for a straight down mounting, even with both sets of length adjusters (mid-point and at the snap mount) at their shortest settings. If you remove the snap mounts from the free ends, undo the mid-point adjuster and discard the lower webbing run, then thread the original snap fittings onto the upper webbing, you'll get short subs. Maybe too short? I don't know. (My own subs are mounted in a different way that isn't easy for you to replicate.) I'm not sure why Schroth uses this overly complicated sub strap configuration (just because they're German?) with its two separate length adjusters per strap. Other makes typically use a single run of webbing with the length adjustment at the snap fitting only. That way you get infinitely variable adjustment with no mid-point hardware to hang up in the seat's sub slot. What's really needed is something like this B-K part for Boxsters: <http://www.hmsmotorsport.com/imgView.php?img=ximg/2246/r9030.jpg>, which spans the seat mounts under the seat and provides an above the floor sub mounting point. (I have an arrangement something like this, but custom fabricated.) I let the car down and it looks like the welds around the jack point tube broke. I'm curious if anyone has had this happen before and how difficult it is to fix. Dave 95 M3

Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2007 18:40:30 -0500 From: kresener@aol.com Subject: Re: Seat Bracket and Harness Install Well, I sat in a friend's car today that has a Pole Position in the passenger seat and a Profi SPG for the driver. After belting into the Pole Position, I can clearly see how for someone my height the shoulder straps could compress the spine in a severe accident. The Profi SPG is too tight to be comfortable for me, given that the Profi XL is a little over an inch wider it'd be about perfect. I spoke to HMS about the XL fitting into my car and they said that they've put many into e-36's with stripped out interiors but would be concerned about it hitting the door panel in my car which still has the interior. Man, there sure seems to be plenty of room to the door panel in the car with the SPG in it and the measurements indicate to me that it'd fit. Dave, I'm not sure if your car has door panels in it or not but if you could check to see if you have the SPG or the XL I'd appreciate it!
