#1. Looking for 3 Spoke Steering Whel - from Richard Sperry

It's seems to be the bearing and supports of the steering column. The slip ring # is correct, but I can't seem to fine those #'s for the wheel and bag. The usually wheel is pn 32 34 2 228 230 and bag is 32 34 2 229 030 If you are installing this on a early m3 you will need pn 32 31 1 162 088 Switch bracket. Rich, been there, done that...

#2. ABS Module - from Patrick Kelly

I'm getting the ABS light after a few minutes of driving; seems to light up after a bit of vibration. I'm assuming it's part #34521138219. RealOEM.com ETK shows a price of $1075. I seem to recall somebody using a place that sells remanufactured units. Is this the way to go here, and if so, who are the preferred vendors? TIA, y'all. Pat Kelly 95 M3 pkelly@agincourtcapital.com

Hi Pat, Have you had the codes read to see what it's complaining about? Unfortunately the only way to read them is to take it somewhere or shell out $$$ for a tool that can do it. I was getting codes for the front wheel speed sensors. I replaced both but no dice. I suspected my controller was bad and replaced it but the light still came on. At least I was able to pick up a race car take-off for cheap. Jim Bassett suggests replacing the brake pedal travel sensor, it's not cheap but a lot cheaper than a new controller. I replaced mine yesterday, hopefully my lights are history. http://www.bmw-m.net/Digest/Archive_2004_08_digest_3836-3890/digest3869.htm#3 Dave 95 M3

It has some wear at 1 o'clock position list is like 430 dollars... I paid 100 dollars for it, with no airbag...Don't need it since I am pulling the airbags out of my car...race seats and five point harnesses kinda useless to have an airbag... 100 bucks plus shipping... The upper replacement is a forty minute job. Chester did a write-up for the lower, rather involved, bearing replacement. As a stop gap measure you can lube the lower bearing utilizing a white lithium aerosol can lube. Connect several straws together (heat shrink tubing) and soak it sown from under the car. It is surprising how much noise transmits up the column from the lower bearing. Here is a good write-up http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=245961 KLB -------------------- 8 -------------------- Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 16:24:56 -0800 From: "Brian Ruiz" <eurowerke@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Looking for 3 Spoke Steering Wheel Speaking of which, Is it the slip ring that causes the steering wheel to make that screechy squeak when it's being turned? Never did anything about it for 2 years. One day while swapping the PS pump I decided to lube the lower steering shaft bushing as suggested by others on the list. You know that was it! Strange because I would hear the noise and it sounded like it was coming from the steering wheel. Try this first, you may be pleasantly surprised that a simple fix would get rid of that annoying noise! --Bill 97 328i 96 M3 >Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2007 16:24:56 -0800 >From: "Brian Ruiz" <eurowerke@gmail.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] Looking for 3 Spoke Steering Whel > >Speaking of which, > >Is it the slip ring that causes the steering wheel to make that screechy >squeak when it's being turned? > >Brian

On my car, I was dead sure the problem was the top bearing or slip ring due to the way the noise sounded. I hit the bottom bearing (as described by Kim B) with Tri-Flow as sort of a hail mary pass before tearing into the steering column...and the noise magically stopped! Note: Kim suggests using aerosol white lithium grease. When I was researching this topic on Bimmerforums, a number of people suggested using a thinner/more penetrating lubricant like Tri-Flow (NOT WD-40!), the theory being that thicker lubes like white lithium wouldn't work down into the bearing properly when simply (and blindly) sprayed on the outside. I don't have any data points to back that up, other than the successful Tri-Flow use by myself and many others. -Pete On 1/19/07, William Townsend <wtownsend@juniper.net> wrote: > > Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2007 11:12:41 -0500 > From: "William Townsend" <wtownsend@juniper.net> > Subject: Re: Looking for 3 Spoke Steering Whel (reply to screechy squeak) > > Brian, > > You know I though that screechy squeak was caused by the slip ring in my > 97 328. #8. airbag light and thanks - from Shelhart2@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2007 19:17:35 EST From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: airbag light and thanks I put in a used DME / ECU and the car started and seems to run fine. I haven't yet gotten it warmed up so am unsure if it did the trick fixing the idle issue I was having (it wasn't giving 5 volts to the throttle position sensor from the old DME). The airbag light stays on once the ignition is turned on and stays on for 3-4 mintes and then goes off. If I turn the car off it goes on again and then stays on another 3-4 minutes like clock work. What sensor might be causing this? A special thanks to Jamie Howton who went out of his way to send a DME to me for diagnosis. Also a special thanks to Marco Romani for selling me a used DME that I bought from him. Shel Hart 1995 M3 - that has hopefully eliminated the gremlins ... 2002 Boxster S

#9. Head Gasket - from Mark Duckworth

Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2007 18:20:29 -0500 From: Mark Duckworth <mdlkml@atari-source.com> Subject: Head Gasket Hey guys, I'm down to the end. I took out all the head bolts. My buddy came over and we tried to separate the head from the block. We pulled, twisted, kicked, hammered, did just about every damn thing we could think of and it refused to even let out a groan. It's stuck. I removed 24 exhaust studs/nuts and separated the manifold from the head, I removed the intake obviously. I removed all the little cooling/vacuum/wires from the head. I removed 14 head bolts and 2 E8 bolts from the front near the timing chain. I removed the sprockets and the timing chain is hanging. What could I have possibly missed? Between the two of us we applied well over 1000 pounds of pressure to it and it wouldn't release. Do I need an engine hoist to separate it? Thanks, Mark

Do I need an engine hoist to separate it? I don't think that's a good idea -- IIRC, mine came up without much of an effort. It is fairly heavy if you are removing it yourself but with help it ahouldn't be a problem. I would take another look at fastners if I were you. -- Jamie Howton 2006 M Roadster 2004 645Ci 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL
