#1. Heater hose - from Mark Duckworth

It connects to the overflow tank through a plastic nipple. Are these a known failure point? Can you replace just the plastic nipple and not the metal hose? Seems kind of silly to buy the whole hose when I could thread in a new nipple perhaps. I can't see any parts just for the nipple on the diagrams. Thanks, Mark

I've purchased O2 sensors (and other stuff) from them, and been happy. Typically, there's a special O2 sensor wrench that is used. It has a cut-out that allows it to fit over the wiring of the sensor as you fit it around the "nut" portion to remove it. I've always borrowed one when needed, but supposedly a 5/8"(?) open-end wrench will work as well. Jim Bassett

Rebuild from Bavarian Engine Exchange costs around $6500 I think. Used "certified, dyno tested" costs $3600, which would be nice in a pinch, I would be doing that at this point had I not pulled the trigger already on the head gasket stuff. All in all my expense will be $2000 doing the work myself and I'm getting plenty of parts that will not be in a long block (tons of cooling system parts and sensors) which would add to your expense anyway. Each method has serious disadvantages either in cost or effort. I'm doing a leap of faith that my rings will stay alright, knowing that if I need to pull the block out I do have such resources available. I just need a car until my theft recovery 3000GT is legal. It just has a slot in it for the wires. Works like a charm. Don't forget anti-seize on the new one and don't use too much or it'll smoke like crazy :-P Thanks, Mark On Thu, 2007-01-25 at 12:04 -0600, Jim Bassett wrote: > Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2007 09:59:15 -0800 (PST) > From: "Jim Bassett" <jim@jimbassett.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] Oxygen sensor > > On Thu, January 25, 2007 9:04 am, L R said: > > The oxygen sensor on the '95 M3 tripped the check engine light the other > > day & I need to replace it. The labor would be much less of course. I already have most of the "refresh" parts on my current motor. I can't see any parts just for the nipple on the > diagrams. What year is your car by the way? Would perhaps simplify it for us. I just replaced all the hoses on my '98 M3 and there is no metal heater hose on my engine (that I recall). From the coolant reservoir (overflow tank) or whatever it's called there's one really long hose that snakes underneath through the fan shroud and eventually makes its way to the LH side of the engine and there's the small diameter one up top that routes back to the radiator. Perhaps that's the one you refer to? The nipple is part of the tank. Oh and btw the ETK and realoem both called out the wrong heater hoses at the firewall connection so watch out. Don't just order these as they are expensive and totally incorrect. Take the ones off your car and do a reverse look-up from the faint numbers that will be on them. Mine came out as 328i parts on the ETK. This would be a good time to replace the reservoir (overflow tank), it's not very expensive and the original one is good and stained at this point. Keep the old one as a spare for the track. ;-) Carlos 98 M3

A 180K car with a fresh head is less valuable than a 180K car with a new heart. The new motor will likely be more efficient too, yielding long term benefits also. I think it comes down if it's a 180K bmw that looks like 180k. Still a very hard and expensive decision either way, unless you are getting custom work done too, (cams) etc. Patrick 97 M3/4 turning 10 in 4 months -----Original Message----- From: Stan Shaw [mailto:Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net] Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2007 1:05 PM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] Re: Head Gasket & Possible Block Work? My car actually looks very good, but I need to fix something, and will be preparing it for stock class club racing, so I don't want any mods. Doing this will make me likely to keep it forever...
