His answer was a 1997 BMW M3 with 150k miles. Sweet! Then he said that on hi to replace it with a Ford F150 Crew Cab to haul his toys. But it was a nice YES! moment. Jason

#3. Broken exhaust manifold studs - from Lawrence Barbieri
Top
Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2007 09:17:00 -0500 From: "Lawrence Barbieri" <larry@logicalconclusions.com> Subject: Broken exhaust manifold studs Hello everybody, Over the weekend I was attempting to remove my entire exhaust system. I was successful at getting 4 of the 6 nuts off the exhaust studs that hold up the pre-cat pipe. Unfortunately, not so successful at getting the remaining 2 off, as both of them sheared off. I know this topic has been discussed before, but I was hoping maybe someone had some new experience with this. Once the exhaust was removed I had about 1/4" or more of a nub left sticking out of the manifold flange. I have soaked them repeatedly with penetrating oil and heated the nub up to a nice cherry red. I can get a pair or vise grips around the nub, but so far I can not get it to budge. The vise grips just slip around the nub as it refuses to turn. So, anyone have a magic incantation to get these things to release their death grip on my manifold? I am assuming they are threaded into the manifold (although I think I read a post from Chester saying his were press fit and he managed to knock them out). How hot can I heat up that flange before I have to worry about damaging the manifold itself? The stud glows red pretty quickly, but I would think you want the manifold itself to be very hot so it expands and helps release the bond on the threads of the stud. I am using a MAPP gas torch, but I have a friend with an acetylene torch that may be able to get this hotter, faster. If I can't get them to unscrew, I'll be forced to cut them off flush with the manifold and attempt to drill them out. Anyone done this? (I hate the thought of this, by the way). Once drilled, if the threads don't release then I'll be forced to drill out the threads and put a bolt through the hole. Anyone done this? Any thoughts, ideas, ruminations are appreciated. - Larry

Yea, I heard about the BMW replacements, specifically that they were not studs anymore, but bolts, and that they cost something like $15-$20 each!! Yikes! So, it sounds like you ended up drilling yours out? Were able to manage this with the manifold attached to the car? (Because the thought of removing that only scares the daylights out of me, 12 more chances to break off a stud, this time in the head!). Did you use any special type of drill bit, cobalt perhaps? Any tips or experiences you had while drilling them out would be appreciated, like what size bit you started with, how hard is the material? Stuff like that. Already got all the copper nuts ready to go. I was doing this for 2 reasons. 1) I was replacing my guibo, which I did manage to finish and 2) I'm installing a new UUC RSC36 exhaust. Thanks!!!! - Larry On 1/29/07, Bill Sharp <M3@cueframe.us> wrote: > > Larry, > > Fear not. > > I had the same thing happen to me about 2 months ago when I decided > to take mine apart. > > Turns out, there are no studs to fit snuggly but rather these > obscenely expensive bolts (grade 8, I believe) that you can pick up > at a good hardware store for chump change. > > They'll be loose in the flange, but they work just fine. > > Remember to get new copper nuts for everything, all the way back. > They are one use items and are designed to be used only once. > > Hope this gives you a little cheer. > > Best, > > Bill > '99 > > Ft. #5. Transmission Request - from Neil Maller
Top
Date: Mon, 29 Jan 2007 10:16:41 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: Transmission Request I have a Euro 6-speed on the way, and a possible taker for my original 5-speed to replace a failing unit in a 325i. Two questions: 1) Anyone have a stock M3 shift lever and selector rod left over and for cheap? These would be parts 5 and 9 here: <http://tinyurl.com/le3pl>. I have a UUC short shift with DSSR, and since the 5-speed is going to a "civilian" owner the short shifter wouldn't be appropriate. (Carlos got my old shift lever years ago!) The 325i gearbox uses different P/N's so my shifter bits will be needed. 2) Anyone with the Euro 6-speed have any special installation hints, tips or gotchas? I'm already familiar with the clutch and gearbox R&R, so I'm only looking for info, if any, that might be unique to the 6-speed. Note that I'll have the matching driveshaft, shifter parts and crossmember, so that stuff's already covered. TIA, especially point #1. No idea of the history, except that my buddy saw it last week for $9K, it sold, and is now in this ad for 11K. I think someone is just looking for a quick buck.
