#2. GC RSMs - from Brian Ruiz

Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2007 13:47:43 -0800 From: "Brian Ruiz" <eurowerke@gmail.com> Subject: GC RSMs Hey all, My RSMs arrived yesterday afternoon, but I am a bit concerned about the reinforcement plates that they include. On both of the units, the studs are not pushed down flush through the holes in the plate, and on one of the plates, the studs are only welded on one side of the head diameter (same as they are in the picture on the GC site, http://www.ground-control-store.com/images/fullsize/bmwmountfull_fs.jpg). On the plate whose studs are only welded on one side, the stud head has about a 5/16" gap (the larger gap of the two plates) with the surface of the plate, and that is what most concerns me. It seems that with hard driving these welds could break because of the leverage of the studs not being flush. I would assume GC knows what they're doing, but I would appreciate advice on whether or not to return these for another set. Additionally, I also did not receive any upper washers with the units as they show in the picture, is this wrong? Thanks guys, Brian

#4. Head Gasket - Reassembly Prep Question - from Mark Duckworth

Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2007 00:12:29 -0500 From: Mark Duckworth <mdlkml@atari-source.com> Subject: Head Gasket - Reassembly Prep Question Hey guys, Well to start I got my head back from VAC Motorsports. Besides being great guys all around, they did what appears to be a bangup job. I saw a couple of race cars they are working on and they're quite proud of their brand new dyno and alignment machines and were showing them off to me (they were very nice). Never in my life was in a place with random bmw race cars here and there :-P I dare not take it out from the wraps until it's time to put it on, but here is a pic: http://picasaweb.google.com/evaporated/M3HeadGasketRepair/photo#5029700376552807666 They removed and reinstalled the cams for me too. Convenience :) Anyway, you can't tell but it basically looks brand new except for some minor discoloration on one valve. So that leads me to my questions. I don't have an air compressor and I got one of those air duster cans from wal-mart. However, try as I might it really works like crap. I think I'll have to resort to q-tips. Lots of q-tips, followed by several threadings of an old bolt. Any other suggestions though? Almost all the holes seem to have some amount of liquid in them, be it coolant or oil or some mix of the two. And the other much more serious question is how clean is clean when it comes to the block surface. VAC's engine builder told me to use 80 grit sandpaper. I got some and it seems awfully rough, so I tested it on a non-sealing section of the block and sure enough it seemed to have left what I would consider deep gouges. My thought is either my definition of smooth is off the wall wrong or they really meant oh 800 grit. The plastic scraper just isn't doing the job though. Over the entire surface the old gasket seems to have left a clear almost teflon like substance which is slippery both slippery and ridged. While fairly clean looking, I am 100% sure there is residue left over as I can scratch it away with my fingernail. I'll google around but any personal experience suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Liquid is non-compressible and if you tighten the bolt, you can do bad things. Stick with q-tips and papertowels rolled to a point. #8. Cat question - from don wentz

Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2007 12:08:47 -0800 From: "don wentz" <dasduck@comcast.net> Subject: Cat question In the initial install of the Euro 3.0L engine in my 93 325is we used the factory stock Euro exhaust, including the headers, cats, and cat-back muffler section. Now that I've passed DEQ with no issues, we're looking at building a 3" single to reduce weight, improve sound. We were thinking of using the stock cats and combining downstream of them, but some of the recent posts seemed to indicate that the pre-96 cats were too restrictive. Would 2 aftermarket cats be a better solution? Or, I think I know where to get a set of post 96 cats, just adapt those and plug one set of 02 sensor mounts (all OBD1 car/motor)? It is really beautiful when it clean and waxed, and looks as good against the snow in the winter as it does in the summer sunshine. Mine is overdue for paint. I am considering a new(er) PPG paint called Vibrance Liquid Metal in Candy Apple Red. The stuff really pops. Cost is the big issue. About $6K for a complete.
