My brother-in-law was quoted b y the dealer $2500 to replace a radiator, pulleys, belts, hoses, water pump, and t-stat on an E36. His radiator went south. The dealer, Weatherford BMW here in the S.F. Bay Area was charging him labor for every item even though you can't change the pump w/out removing the belts. You can't change the pulleys w/out removing the belts, etc. He was quoted about $1300 in parts and about $1200 in labor for a three hour driveway job. He got it done at a local shop for parts + $250. Doing it yourself takes between 1/2 hour and all day...it can be a pita. Dave T.

I had this happen to me when the battery died in the car. I had a shorted cell and wouldn't hold a charge. I could put it on a charger and start the car about twice before complete failure. Once it hit complete failure the lock cylinder spun freely on occasion. Replaced the battery and it has never happened since. I have only done it once and it took about 1/2 hour but people who do it for a living say it can sometimes take an hour or more to get removed and the new one installed. I would say that charging an hour of labor to do it is fair. Personally, I would never let anyone work on my cars under any circumstances, but I know that many people run off to the dealer quite often. For those people paying the hour rate is probably the way to go. Dave T.

I dug up a URL from a UUC list post a few weeks old that has great pics of the cylinder and shows you the small tab that breaks...see the last image on the page. If your cylinder is spinning its only catching on the jagged edges of the broken off tab. Once its worn smooth its going to be spin city for ya. http://www.bolhuijo.com/bmwlockcylinder/ Dave T.

The parts guy is wrong. According to the parts guide, it takes 0.7 hours to R&R the switch. The service department probably is throwing in a 'free' safety inspection. As a shop owner, we round up on the labor guide time if it's under an hour because we have to put it on the lift, get started on the job and clean up afterwards. This doesn't mean that we round up all individual steps, just the total, so, if you needed 3 things fixed at .6 hours each, we would charge 2.0 hours instead of 1.8.
