You have to remove the radio and OBC. Them Germans engineered the various plastic levels in the dash to have a hole to that you can put in a philips screwdriver to remove the screws holding it in. Other than that, it also has tabs so after you remove the screws, you just pop the sucker out with some force. After that I think it pops out from behind. There might be screws sorta hidden behind the vent grids but I can't remember 100%. If there are any retaining screws they could also be accessible from underneath (head unit out) too, but again I'm a little foggy. I do remember it wasn't that hard to figure it out as you move along, probably a 1.5 beers...maybe 2 or more for you thou :) I don't think you have to remove the drivers kick panel, but don't hold me to it. Looking at the replacement part helped significantly IIRC. #4. RE: Kumho Escsta ASX Opinions - from Tripp Racioppi

Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2007 11:06:02 -0800 (PST) From: Tripp Racioppi <r3_m3@yahoo.com> Subject: RE: Kumho Escsta ASX Opinions I too, just mounted the Kumho's on a stock, staggered set up. They have been, as you say, good in wet weather and dry. Have not had a chance to experience their performance in winter driving, but one of the reasons I also went with an all-season tire. One interesting note is that when I first got them, I inflated them according to the pressure settings listed on the door frame decal (30 psi front, 32 psi rear, I think). They always looked like they were too low on pressure, especially the front). When I engaged in a "spirited" acceleration, I got a feeling as though the sidewalls were "wringling," almost a shudder. I talked to several people and they suggested using equal pressure all around and increase the pressure. I went 35 all around and that seems to have resolved the acceleration shudder. But my questions are: was it the tires? what is the optimal pressure for these? should the pressures be "staggered"? more front than rear? You all know the rest. Thanks for any help.... r3 97 Arctic Silver/Black M3 86 Heller Rot/Tan (just converted to black) 325 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2007 12:08:58 -0500 From: Jonathan Evans <jonathanevans@hotmail.com> Subject: Kumho Escsta ASX Opinions Thought I would add another data point about tire selection for the M3. I have been enjoying the Kumho Ecsta ASX on stock 17 staggered rims for a few months now. I went with all seasons since I wanted better near-winter weather handling here in Raleigh. We had a few snow flurries and the car handled it with aplomb. Heavy rain hasn't been a problem either. They have been good, quiet all season tires so far. We'll see how they hold up in the Summer heat.Jonathan95 m3 --------------------------------- Don't be flakey. Get Yahoo! Mail for Mobile and always stay connected to friends.

I have the Ecsta ASX on my wife's soon-to-be-ex-Jetta, and I thought they were terrible in the snow. (I didn't expect anything different; I only wanted to be able to get through this winter before selling the car in the spring, and my wife's commute is 1.2 miles so low risk.) That said, my experience might be biased by the fact that the Jetta wore Hakkapeliitas before the Kumhos. Obligatory M3 content: my car wears Blizzak LM-22s and I couldn't be happier with them. Mine are at least 3 years old now, driven winter only, and they provide plenty of grip in medium bad condition. They do not, however, provide the ultimate level of grip that the WS-50s or newer Blizzaks do. The main advantage, from my point of vew, is that these are effectively a snow capable all-season tire that I can run without concern from late fall to early spring when I really don't have opportunities to push the car, anyawy. We had a freak(ish) snow storm here last night and I put on my new RE050As which I had planned to drive on down to Infineon (starting tonight, arriving late Friday) and looped the car going about 30mph. The LM-22s are going to carry us to SF, it seems. I'm not going to trust the RE050As to take us over the Siskyous now. Gus

(Last weekend I also replaced bulbs in the instrument cluster, so had it out as well, but couldn't quite get to the wires. Maybe come at it from the glove box side (gee, I haven't removed the glove box in a while, this should be fun :-)). > probably a 1.5 beers...maybe 2 or more for you thou :) Just to be clear, I only drink beers while working on *other people's* cars. When working on my own cars, I wait til I'm done :-) But your assessment is correct, probably about 2 beers :-) Thanks to everybody for the responses. Cheers, Jim Bassett - really dislikes buzzes/rattles in the M3, but liking the CD43 :-)

I figured it was the wires, and tried several times to re-arrange in place, to no avail. I resigned myself to living with the buzz. Then, a couple weeks later, after argument number one thousand and four with my wife about how "it's too damn cold the car when you drive", I slid the center vent directional slider to her side with great theatrical effect. Bing -- the rattle went away. Slider anywhere in the middle: vent buzzes like a bee swarm. Slider to either end: vent is blissfully silent. So now I keep the center vent pointed to her side, and no more irritating noise. Also, the vent doesn't rattle any more. Thank you folks, I'll be here all week. Moral of the story: this is just one data point, but it may not be the wires.
