Anyone else had this issue? At about 90K both of mine were in the same condition...all the plastic around the actual sensor was just so brittle you could peel it right off. So..yea..pretty common I think. As for 'while your in there' I would consider doing the heater hoses. Dave T

While they bolted up properly, they're obviously a different diameter. It's a noticieable difference in width, but this was a part number I got from a dealer parts counter, and verified it on RealOEM, although there were two different part numbers there. Has there been an update in the parts, or do I possibly have the wrong ones on my car?? :( Jonathan L. _________________________________________________________________ The average US Credit Score is 675. What part number are they? 33-21-2-228-156? That should be the number for the M3 axles. The rest of the E36's use 33-21-1-229-428...at least that's what my quick check shows. Are these new from BMW or are they rebuilt? Dave T.

All the M3 axles use the same CV boot which is different than the normal E36 boots. I thought that was due to the difference in diameter. If the M3's had two different sizes they would require two different boot kits...unless they were all the same size dia where the boot clamps down... I would imagine the M3 got the hollow axles (stronger) and the normal E36's got the solid and smaller dia units. Just guessing though. Too damn lazy to turn on the PC that runs my ETK lol. A little faded but definitely not cracked up or anything. I wonder if you can give BMW a VIN and get a service history. I keep wondering if maybe my car had a new engine at 60K or 70K. Do you guys keep your car in a garage? Maybe that's part of the longetivity of my car. Thanks, Mark

It didn't cure the tapping but it did get the heater core flowing. I didn't realize too but I had the top adjustment dial set on cold which was part of the no heat condition. So the tapping refused to stop so I just took it for a drive down the highway and varied between 2000-3000 RPM for about 5 miles. Once I got home it was quiet as a mouse. I drove the car to the mall 25 miles away and back and it was uneventful. I still can't find any leaks, the car has plenty of power so it seems I timed the VANOS right. I'm still in shock I did it right but it looks like I might be finished with this one. I'll get the oil changed in a couple days and put full synthetic back in. I'll start working on my writeup, which will probably be more of a quick reference and things to not forget. Thanks again, Mark

A little faded but definitely not cracked up or anything. What year is your car? The 95 knock sensors are not the same as the later ones...perhaps the OBDII sensors have a better plastic housing. At 90K mine were sure shot, I cant imagine that at 180K the plastic is not at least cracked. FWIW: Mine looked OK on the car but it was a whole different story once they were removed and in my hand. I was also getting the occasional knock sensor code which is what prompted the swap. Dave T.

Maybe that's part of the longetivity of my car. Yes, my car is always in the garage, and I know its history and it has never sat outside. Its white with black interior and looks brand new. The original owner really took care of it. Its even white underneath ;-) All of the plastic under the hood is also in very good shape...I was actually very surprised to see that the knock sensors were so deteriorated. I think that the crack on the forward sensor would allow moisture to get into the sensor and cause it to fail. Dave

#14. Why is my M3 spewing gas out the cap? - from Kirk
Top
Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2007 19:59:24 -0800 From: "Kirk" <admranger@earthlink.net> Subject: Why is my M3 spewing gas out the cap? Ok, so the club race practice day at PIR went without a hitch. Put in 4 out of 5 sessions, 100 miles (divide by 1.5 to get number of laps), set personal best time. Good day. Saturday, better personal best time (1:11.5-ish), race goes ok (for me anyone -- one unlucky guy had a bad day). However, the car is spewing gas out the cap (no where else, it's coming out from the cap... This happens when the tank is over 1/2 full (and me w/o the Bimmerworld double fuel pump setup...). So, we replace the gas cap w/a newer (but not "new" one). No joy. I think I'm clever so I unhook the vent line (blue line) at the charcoal canister. Still no good. Fortunately, packing the filler neck and around the cap w/shop towels minimizes the spewage, it is still happening. So...WTF? Thoughts? On a good note, the Zionsville radiator w/electric fan that Brett sold me worked FANTASTIC (no pun intended). I used to have 290 degree oil temps and the water temp would rise and move the factory gauge. Not good. The new radiator dropped my oil temps 50 deg F! Even the fancy Stewart water pump had no effect on my temps until this radiator was added. Sweet unit. For anyone who is so bored as to still be reading this, Sunday was a non-event for me except for setting another personal best of 1:11.4 in the fun race. Thanks, Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter Incontinent '95 M3 #21 I-stock...
