#1. exhaust manifold studs - from Adam Lazur
Top
Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2007 00:26:30 -0800 From: Adam Lazur <adam@lazur.org> Subject: exhaust manifold studs I took the exhaust off my '95 M3 today to replace the guibo. I dodged a bullet and none of the studs broke off. However, 3 of them backed out. I'm planning on hitting up the local $tealers to get the replacement studs, since I think I'm in the clear since the obdi cars don't have the crazy expensive studs. Since this is my first foray into this aspect of bimmer ownership, I have a coupla questions: - I plan on installing the new studs using the "lock 2 nuts together" method. Is there a better technique? - Should I lock tight the studs when I put em in? Should I anti-seize the copper nuts? -- Adam Lazur

#3. Head gasket - no sealer at timing chain cover? - from Peter Loron

Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2007 12:53:42 -0700 From: "Peter Loron" <peterloron@gmail.com> Subject: Head gasket - no sealer at timing chain cover? Ok, so following in Mark's footsteps, I'm putting my motor back together. Last night I got the head set back on the block, put the washers and head screws in, and did the first-stage tightening sequence on the screws. I did not do the second and third stages since I spaced and left the protractor at home. I realized this morning that I'd forgotten to put a touch of gasket sealer at the junction of the timing chain cover and the block, as I have seen suggested in some places. What does the hive mind say? Is this a big deal? Should I back out the screws and apply some? Just dab some on from the outside? Wait and see if I get a leak? Thanks. -Pete

I think you mean bolts ;-) Anyway - was the block decked? If it wasn't you should probably be ok, if it was then you'll probably have a leak and the size is a matter of a guess. If none of the bolts have had any significant amount of torque on them I'd start over. If they have been torqued down a bit then you're taking your chances. If it does leak and the leak isn't real bad permatex makes a sealer you can apply that works it's way in from the outside - but the engine needs to be warm for it to work. BTDT works great. Pete, Did the same thing and mine's not leaking :-P It's one of those things you can fix after the fact if you're McGuyver-like too. Thanks, Mark

I've been running Carbotech pads for a few years, starting off when my '99 was still a street/track car. Now that it's a track only car, I run the slightly more aggressive XP11 compounds up front and the XP10 in the back, works quite well so far and will likely stick with the pads until I change to the Stop Tech setup. Though I've heard that if you provide the backing plate of pretty much any pad for any car, Carbotech can replicate it for that application, so will look into that possibility when the time comes. > -------------------- 1 -------------------- > Date: Fri, 09 Mar 2007 11:31:02 -0800 > From: Rex Tener <rex_tener@yahoo.com> > Subject: Carbotech Brake Pads? > > A lot of my buddies running SCCA T2 love Carbotech brake pads. I did go through the first round of tightening the bolts (the box from Febi actually says "screw" on it!), so they've got 22ft-lb on them now. The block was not decked, so I won't go back and take it apart again. #10. FS: E36 AC Compressor - from Nancy and Bob Fluharty
Top
Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2007 15:49:44 -0400 From: "Nancy and Bob Fluharty" <fluhar@worldnet.att.net> Subject: FS: E36 AC Compressor AC compressor from a '95 M3 - $125 plus shipping (22# from 45220) This compressor was on the engine I bought for my S50/E30 swap, but I decided to forego AC. Made by Denso (ND). Pictures at http://home.att.net/~fluhar/parts.htm . I'll throw in a new AC drive belt which I never used. This unit appears to be in excellent condition, but I have never put it in service. Therefore, should it prove to be defective, I will buy it back (30 day limit). I believe this compressor fits all M/S/50/52 engines. If anyone can confirm or better define that for me, I would appreciate it. Bob Fluharty Cincinnati
