Any been there, done that? Anyone got parts laying around? Thanks, Vince --------------------------------- The fish are biting. Get more visitors on your site using Yahoo! Search Marketing.

Stick to change intervals for brake fluid and coolant also. By the way, coolant at the dealer is running $17 a gallon here (Seattle) locally, after hitting a high of $28 a year ago. -------------------- 6 -------------------- Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2007 12:45:14 -0700 From: "J Files" <jsf.online@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] m3 pseudo storage Similar situation here - my '98 is not getting the miles it used to, thanks to many factors (car for business miles, baby seat only in wife's 325, bike commuting). I think I managed 13 tanks of gas in 2006. I would have to check the log book to be sure, but that's roughly the 4k you name. This is not a "put it away for the winter" car; its a garaged car that gets driven at least twice every three weeks - I'll commute in it if I have not been in it lately, drive it if we manage to go out without the baby, etc. Now that its gone through this low-mileage-but-regular-use method for a year, any thing special that I should pay attention to? I expect this will continue for a while, any thoughts for going forward? Jim

Nothing really unusual here. > Is this the right time to cash out? Is there value if I continue to run it > to 200K? IMO, those are questions only you can answer. Me, I plan on keeping my M3 for the foreseeable future, even planning the motor rebuild sometime next year. It's approaching 180K miles, it's still way too much fun to drive, hauls the family around when needed with ease, and there's really nothing out there that I'd want to replace it with. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett

Once you get close to 200k the car becomes a keep until wheels fall off. My wife's 325i has 167k on it and we use it as the family truckster. Its been a great car and we plan to keep it until the wheels fall off...Then put new wheels on and keep trucking! #7. Exterior Door Handle Stuck Open - from dgcrum@jps.net
Top
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2007 09:59:48 -0700 (GMT-07:00) From: dgcrum@jps.net Subject: Exterior Door Handle Stuck Open The driver's side exterior door handle on my '96 M3 got stuck open over the weekend. I was able to take it all apart and *gently* bend the handle frame enough that the handle moves freely again. Before bending it, I noticed that the frame (which holds the handle, lock mechanism, and a few microswitches) had a couple of cracks right at the points where the handle trim piece is attached. According to the ETK, only the whole handle assembly with lock, etc is available. (p/n 51 21 8 199 923, I think. There were three listed including a Motorsport version - could it be faster? ;-) ). I've got it put back together and working right now, but I know it's just a matter of time before the handle frame breaks. It sounds like I need to just buy the whole assembly (but use my existing lock so I don't have to change keys) since there are no individual repair parts available. I'm assuming any used parts will either have the same cracks or be likely to develop the same problem...anyone BTDT? David Crum 96 M3 => 187k miles (time for the a bunch of the cast pot metal parts to fail)

Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2007 16:47:55 +0000 From: kwill69058@comcast.net Subject: Life after?????? I agree with Jim 100% I bought my 95 M3, two and a half yrs ago off of ebay for $10k with 110k miles on it . I have sunk money into it with the exact same parts that you have and then some others that would work out to about 3k more. Wheels, Tires, Conforti Kit. My next venture is suspension this year and then a new motor next year. If you are a constant worrier and would feel better - move to a newer car. My car has just hit 160k miles. Its still better than a monthly payment. There is not much out there as sexy. -Keith ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ( If you can read this, thank a teacher, If you can read this in English, thank our Soldiers ! )

Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2007 13:21:02 -0500 From: Andrej Dolenc <adolenc@erols.com> Subject: Reverse Light Switch Gruppe, I noticed the other day that my reverse lights were not working. First try the easy fix, bulbs. They were still the originals from '97, so who knows. No dice there. So if it's not that, then likely the reverse light switch on the tranny. Should that failing set off an OBC warning? The brake switch raised hell when it went bad, figured this would do the same. How much of a PITA is it? Thanks, Andrej '97 M3

Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2007 12:21:26 -0500 From: Steve Klein <s.klein@steveklein.cc> Subject: Re: Life after?????? Agreed. I bought my '95 in 2000 with 95K on it and I'm pushing 173k/ mi now. I've sunk a fair amount into the standard replacements and some upgrades and I'll be sinking a lot more over time. But I plan to keep this car indefinitely and the available market for parts, the style and balance of the car and the comments I still get have me very satisfied with the beast. Plus, with everything in the engine original (aside from lifters and VANOS unit/sprockets/chain/ tensioners) it still runs like a champ. In the age of disposable cars, this one's a definite keeper.
