Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2007 11:37:11 -0700 From: Kent Shephard <Kents@kls-consulting.com> Subject: Rear Lower Shock Mount Issues Hi, The title is mostly correct. Today I had the sleeve and bolt pull through the bushing on my Bilstein Sports. The bushing is a $1.50 but I have to wait for Bilstein to ship it. The sleeve is pressed into the bushing which is pressed into the shock body. So how do I prevent this from ever happening again? Should I worry? Kent Shephard kents@kshephard.com

Yesterday on the way to work my rear end dropped (bolt snapped). I nursed it to the local mechanic and he had to weld a metal plate and replace the bolt ($650 thanks!). Add some bushings I was going to replace but I'm too busy to get around to and here goes a grand... Not sure if this is a common issue (I didn't think so) but all in all the car has 110K and has been quite realiable. It's still quite fun at both autoXs and track events and betwwen maintenance/gas/depreciation it costs less than any decent thing out there (an evo may fit the bill too). Stefano 10 year old stock M3 still going strong. This washer is supposed to be used on the lower shock bolt but many people think it belongs on the top of the shock. If you don't run a large washer between the lower bolt and the shock bushing, the bolt will pull through the bushing like that. Just pick some up at the hardware store. That washer is a pretty important safety feature IMO especially with shocks like Bilsteins. I've heard of at least one person losing a car because of improper assembly and was at the track when it happened to another but he caught it in time. On one instance a shop assembled it incorrectly in the other case a dealership did. <eeps> Carlos 98 M3

I even took the switch out and it tested fine with an ohm meter, but still didn't worked. Replaced it and voila. The connector was easy to remove on my 95 - squeeze a spring. The switch is not terribly hard to reach using an open-end wrench - 17mm, I think. First try the easy fix, bulbs. They were still the originals from '97, so who knows. No dice there. So if it's not that, then likely the reverse light switch on the tranny. Should that failing set off an OBC warning? The brake switch raised hell when it went bad, figured this would do the same. How much of a PITA is it?
