My '99 has over 175K miles on mine, but I did have some head gasket issues at 150K miles. For the use my car has seen, that's not such a big deal, though. We actually had a guy in our school yesterday who had a track rat M3 (I think a '97 or '98) with 265,000 miles on it! That's not a typo. The only reason I sold the car was to take over my wife's 97 M3/4. If you take care of the interior and exterior, and the car makes you smile when you get in. Keep it. No major gremlins to worry about, and even a new motor is cheaper than a new car...plus you can put cams in the new motor, etc, etc and have BETTER than original. I've always had a steady diet of upgrades for my car to keep the relationship fresh. 75k seats, 100k suspension refresh (koni/H&R), 120k stereo (a/d/s speakers plus amp plus subwoofers in back. Every tweak made the car feel new again while keeping the core that I love so much. I'm contemplating a 535it as my next possible car, and I would only buy that used. That gives you a sense of my timeline to sell this car. Marc Plante E36 M3/4, only 76k Vienna, VA

Check the other shock while car is in the air. -------------------- 3 -------------------- Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2007 11:37:11 -0700 From: Kent Shephard <Kents@kls-consulting.com> Subject: Rear Lower Shock Mount Issues Hi - The title is mostly correct. Today I had the sleeve and bolt pull through the bushing on my Bilstein Sports. The bushing is a $1.50 but I have to wait for Bilstein to ship it. The sleeve is pressed into the bushing which is pressed into the shock body. So how do I prevent this from ever happening again? Should I worry? Kent Shephard

As far as I am concerned our '95 M3 with 102K on it is just getting broken in ;-) Dave T.

The shop that did the install must have been morons (mostly off, not on). The stock bolt head is not much larger than the tube. I'll be fixing this, buying new bolts from the dealer also. Our neighbors were a nice retired couple in their 70's and the old guy would be out there every day with his 60's something Pontiac GTO convertible - red w/ white top! We were DINKs then, the wife in her Audi and me in my Porsche 914. Fast forward, and now I'm thinking retirement house (just three year's away), will have three car garage -- one mandatory space for the M3! Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2007 14:19:46 -0500 From: "Mike DePolo" <smiked1@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] m3 pseudo storage I store my cars for the winter. I change my oil before storage, and my coolant every other year. If you do any kind of annual fluid change (diff, trans, PS, etc.) it should be done before storage. Used oil is acidic and can contain condensation. I flush my brake fluid after storage because brake fluid is hygroscopic. If your brake fluid is old, you may want to flush before storage. Moisture in the brake system can can corrode and seize calipers while sitting. I also use fuel stabilizer and a battery tender. It's not a good idea to start the car at all unless your going to get it up to full operating temp and drive it a good distance. Starting and idling or short trips will just build up condensation in your oil and exhaust system. The first start after storage is the most damaging. Your likely doing more harm than good starting a car every few weeks if you don't actually need to drive it. I put the OBC in "code" mode before the initial start after storage. I then crank the engine until it builds up oil pressure. If the car doesn't have this feature, I pull the fuel pump relay or coil wire and crank. If the car has been in storage an extremely long period of time, you may want to crank it without the plugs until it builds oil pressure. This will relieve some pressure from the rod and main bearings which ride on a film of oil. I don't put the car up on stands. I find that any flat spotting of the tires usually goes away after some driving. I've also read that letting the shocks and struts hang can cause corrosion on the shafts which could otherwise protected inside the tube. If necessary, the car can also be quickly started and moved in an emergency (garage fire, flood, etc).
