Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2007 08:50:58 -0700 From: "Peter Loron" <peterloron@gmail.com> Subject: First oil change after head gasket replacement So I'm finally about ready to try firing up the M3 after repairing the head and getting everything (I hope!) reinstalled. I plan to change the oil after some short (50 miles?) interval. Thoughts on which oil to use for the initial "sacrificial" fill? I'd rather not throw away 7 quarts of good synthetic if I don't have to... -Pete

I've been instructed by a mechanic before about using a quart of ATF to help clean an engine out internally, as apparently most quality brands have increased detergents well beyond oil to "flush" gunk and dirt out. I haven't done this personally, and am not sure I could actually bring myself to do this without tons of verification it is okay for a bimmer. My father purchased a rather maintenance neglected acura legend years ago that had some lifter clatter and oil consumption. He tried the ATF as instructed for 100 miles and the clatter all but disappeared and oil burning improved, so apparently it freed up the gunky lifters and oiling rings. Maybe someone else on the list can validate, or add caution as per your use of it. It's one of the best mineral oils your can get, has a lot of moly for protection, and a good detergent package. It's also cheap and comes in jugs. It's easier to fill this way and I use the jugs for recycling oil. If it's okay for that application, it should probably also be useful for this one. He's got way more knowledge and experience than I, so I'll take his word for it. Good luck! -jeff S52 Sedan | S50 Trackdog > I've been instructed by a mechanic before about using a quart of > ATF to help clean an engine out internally, as apparently most quality > brands have increased detergents well beyond oil to "flush" gunk and > dirt out. Depending on what year your BMW is, the sticker may say it is "lifetime fill - do not replace." The answer is it depends. First, ignore the BMW Lifetime idea - change it every 2-3 years minimum. ATF is the proper weight but you can use the heavier MTL in a warmer climate or if you do extensive track duty. The MTL might quiet a noisy transmission but it may make it stiffer shifting. Bottom line: either will work, you won't harm the transmission. Just change it regularly.
