That's quite an achievement. It also seems to be very compact - look at the cylinder heads - and of course since a V8 is barely any longer than an L4 it can be pushed well back in the engine compartment for better weight distribution. Tasty hydroformed headers too, like the V10 M5. I note that BMW isn't making any claims about the new V8 engine's manufacturing cost compared to the S54... Anyone else wondering how much effort it would be to stuff this beast into an E36 M3? 400+ HP with an engine that weighs less than the S54 sounds like a lot of grins. Of course the engine alone would probably cost more than what my car is worth.... Dave Bell 95 M3

An E36 with a nice V8 sound would turn some heads, though. :-) I guess we'll need to wait 8-10 years for enough of these things to have been sold and crashed for the used engine market to be priced more reasonably. Probably not worth it to swap one into a 20 year old E36 at that point, tho. -Pete On 3/23/07, Dave Bell <davebell@cox.net> wrote: > > Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2007 12:15:44 -0400 > From: Dave Bell <davebell@cox.net> > Subject: Re: V8 M3 Overview Doc > > Mark wrote: > >Interesting overview of the new V8 M3 in this PDF from BMW. > > ><http://www.justracing.com/galleries/displayimage.php?pos=-4049> > > Sounds great. There was a rumor that Conforti's twin-screw was going to be CARB-certified, but I don't know for sure. I'm guessing the new V-8 should be good to go... Anyone on the West Coast needs to attend a Club Race that Keith Feldott is attending: he's running an E36 in C-Mod with a de-stroked V8. Immaculately done, sounds awesome. Jim Bassett

It sees pretty popular with the SCCA Street Mod autocrossers. I believe Bob Tunnell won the national championship with one last year. If it was CARB approved, it would be pretty hard to resist for my sedan. Though an E90 M3 Touring might make me change my mind about buying new BMW's. Rex
