#7. Ask for a CLUE report ... better than CARFAX ... but hard to access - from Skip Bogard
Top
Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2007 18:24:00 -0400 From: Skip Bogard <skip.bogard@alumni.duke.edu> Subject: Ask for a CLUE report ... better than CARFAX ... but hard to access Tucker, I've sent you the carfax report separately in PDF format. That car has been repossessed & sold at auction last month. It's out of warranty. Nevertheless, it may still be a nice car, but be careful. Before you buy it, ask your insurance company to please run a CLUE report on it. A CLUE report is much better than a CARFAX report, but unfortunately only insurance companies that participate in actually creating the CLUE database can purchase reports. However, this is almost every insurance company that you've ever heard of. Unfortunately, it doesn't include ~you~. So if you've never heard of these CLUE reports...pay attention :) now.... I just learned of CLUE reports this week... and here I'm age 48 and have been on Suzy's M3 list for about 10 years. Maybe I was sleeping, or maybe this is new news to this list. I learned of these because State Farm & I have been fighting since Oct 2006 over the value of my '95 M3 that one of their customers hit & "totaled" (at least according to State Farm...I think it could have been fixed by a Certified BMW Repair Shop with the proper fixtures..... The major issuer of CLUE reports is ChoicePoint, a Georgia company that is one of the country's biggest compilers and sellers of automobile property loss claims made against automobile insurance policies as well as home owner's insurance. Automobile and home owner's claims are maintained in separate databases, and CLUE reports are issued separately based on the type of insurance. Be very nice to your insurance company when you ask for help getting a CLUE report...consider visiting your insurance agent in person when you ask if you are more personable in person than on the phone. Why? Well, if they turn you away, you most likely cannot run a CLUE report on a vehicle you do not own yet...only after you purchase it. ChoicePoint is fussy about this as they've been in trouble before for releasing personal information they shouldn't have. However, depending on state legislation, you might be able to still obtain a CLUE report within your state. California most likely might be an exceptional state in this regard...thank goodness California has more Democrats than insurance industry executive-slurping Republicans. Good luck. Again, be really careful. State Farm just in one year declared over 30,000 totaled cars in Texas to be salvaged. But, they used companies like Adesa Impact http://www.adesaimpact.com/ to auction salvaged cars to recyclers, scrap yards, & rebuilders. Unfortunately, most of the cars went to rebuilders who then were able to wash the titles. It's really unclear how much State Farm & Adesa were involved in "title washing", but they appear to be under investigation to this day, even though they have settled in the Texas case: http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/01/28/28salvage.html http://www.consumerfed.org/pdfs/Car_Title_Testimony_Written032006.pdf My M3 was rebuilt twice in the front (about $3500 damage both times), fixed for a minor fender bender, and now totaled as of last Friday. None of the accidents were my fault...interestingly not a single body repair was reported in Carfax until Nov 2006 AFTER State Farm & I got into an argument about its value (they devalued it by reporting a 2004 accident that was already in CLUE as of 2005 to CARFAX who would have never known about it otherwise) Fraud? What fraud? It's just business as usual under the Bush pro-Big Insurance industry regime: http://www.collisionweek.com/ Guess who picked it up today? Adesa Impact. Don't buy an Avus Blue '95 M3 VIN WBSBF9325SEH02437 ever! Unless it happens to get repaired by a Certified BMW Repair Center (which it won't....way too costly). Fixed by anyone else... you wouldn't want it. It now needs FOUR new shock towers, entire trunk, left side, and engine harness. Let this be a warning to anyone who in the future Googles the VIN I've given! You were warned! I really missed my '95 M3, but there was nothing close to it BMW has made (since 1995!) that I wanted to own. I thought hard about the Z4M Coupe, but it's too small for even buying grocery's. So to dry up my tears I bought a Cayman S in Sapphire Blue! With two seats, it still has more luggage space than my M3 did! http://bellsouthpwp.net/s/k/skipb/images/skips_cayman_s.jpg It smokes the '95 M3 (but barely, imho). Nevertheless, it has a lot of great 2006 technology...like 6 airbags for only 2 seats! While not cheap, it's not ask expensive as one might think....it stickered for $70,240 and I bought it for $63,769, so don't overlook the Porsche marque..Fritz is dealing! Notice in the pic that It came with a factory fire extinguisher, PASM, PSM, Sport Chronometer, Sand Beige interior with a center console painted the exterior blue color...luggage guard, bunch of other cool stuff... Well...gotta order a harness bar now for it! I found one here: http://www.evoms.com/marketplace/marketplace.asp?curr={C8CE3D1F-311E-47E4-BA6D-D453369E6DFC}&depth=10&parentid={C8CE3D1F-311E-47E4-BA6D-D453369E6DFC} Btw, I have my '95 Eurosport Harness bar 4sale if anyone wants to make an offer. It's sort of like the Porsche bar above. One piece is a bar that bolts under the seat & attaches 3 points of a 5 pt harness. You can leave these in the car all the time....even use the 3" lap belts if you want extra protection on a wet rainy road. Of course, there are two of these for two seats. The harness bar itself connects between the shoulder seat belt points in about 5 minutes. I have 3" five pt harnesses with a latch-lock...with some cool BMW ///M Motorsport patches sewn on each shoulder strap (4 patches total)...and 4 ////M colored bars sewn on the lap belts. Oh, and some "Nerf Bar" padding behind each seat section...mainly to protect you in case your seat bolts should break! It's happened with some racers who didn't reinforce their floors. Strap you're girlfriend into the 5 point harnesses for a reaction! She'll like to be "safely pinned in" trust me on this one. - Skip in Raleigh, NC ... in case anyone wants a ride in the Cayman S or to look at the harness bar! Your g'friend welcome in either case! :) She can install the harness bar with my Snap-On Ni-Cad powered impact wrench into your M3! Just bring me some pictures by later...or post them on http://www.carstuckgirls.com/

I think one of the most important take-aways from this is, if someone else hits you, demand a diminished value payment from their insurance company. Your car is worth less on the open market if it has been damaged before. I think many people have been reluctant to do this in the past because maybe it seems a bit too aggressive or underhanded in some way. However, if an insurance company is going to underpay you for your totalled car just because it was damaged in the past, they are just asking to be hit up for a diminished value claim the first time it is damaged. Fair's fair. If they're playing by those rules, we should play by the same ones. - reid On 4/4/07, Skip Bogard <skip.bogard@alumni.duke.edu> wrote: > Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2007 18:24:00 -0400 > From: Skip Bogard <skip.bogard@alumni.duke.edu> > Subject: Ask for a CLUE report ... better than CARFAX ... but hard to access > > Tucker, > I've sent you the carfax report separately in PDF format. #9. OBC Temperature Probe - from steve

My ohmmeter barely moves when I try a continuity test with it off the car. Is that expected behavior for a sensor, or is it likely faulty?
