As others have stated, this is classic symptom of a bad t-stat - stuck open. Air in the system causes either no heat from the heater or overheating problems. It is a PITA to get to the t-stat - gotta remove the radiator - but once you are there, it's a simple fix. If you still have a plastic t-stat housing, now is the time to replace it with a nice aluminum one. It occurred to me that I may have an air pocket in the cooling system as the engine takes forever to warm up (~20 mins of highway at 70 mph with 35F outside temp) Is there an easy way to get rid of it? How about letting the engine running for a bit with the valve on top of the radiator slightly open? I'm assuming the air would be pushed through the system and eventually escape via the valve... The car is a '98 e36 M3 with 109K and a new radiator. Then again the issue is the car not warming up quickly so until it does not overheat I should be ok right? (track day coming up).. Thanks Stefano '98 M3 running a bit too cool... _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

If you even suspect your thermostat is failing you just need to change it. Its a 30 minute job that will save your engine. Dave T.

[quizzical dog look] You definitely do not need to remove the radiator to get to the tstat. Gotta undo a few hoses and remove the fan, though. Maybe belts as well, not sure. - reid > As others have stated, this is classic symptom of a bad t-stat - stuck > open. > Air in the system causes either no heat from the heater or overheating > problems. > It is a PITA to get to the t-stat - gotta remove the radiator - but once > you are there, it's a simple fix. One minor point: be sure the T-stat is oriented correctly. It has a little inscription on it telling you which way is "up". It has a little bleed hole, which I believe will help it open when there is air in the system (lets a little hot water past). However, like other's have said, if you suspect it -- go ahead and replace it. It's cheap insurance. -----Original Message----- From: Stefano G [mailto:stefanoale@excite.com] Sent: Monday, April 09, 2007 10:21 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] RE: How to get rid of Air pocket in cooling system? I haven't seen the digest yet but lots of people have already responded to me directly and the consensus seems to say NO air pocket but BAD THERMOSTAT. I may not have enough time to fix it prior to my track day but it seems that this won't be an issue as it will give the cooling system a head start. I'll need to drive the car a bit harder on the track to keep the temps in check ;-) Fine by me... I'll fix it when I get back (any quick test to confirm that the thermostat is the culprit?)Thanks again to everyone who responded. Please get this fixed before you do anything else! Just because it is currently in a state which is not causing an overheating problem is not a valid reason for delaying the repair. It's cheap and easy to fix. Muuuuuuuch cheaper than a head R&R and/or a tow home from the track. -Pete Stefano G wrote: > Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2007 13:12:14 -0400 (EDT) > From: "Stefano G" <stefanoale@excite.com> > Subject: RE: How to get rid of Air pocket in cooling system? > > I haven't seen the digest yet but lots of people have already responded to me directly and the consensus seems to say NO air pocket but BAD THERMOSTAT.
