The one in the dash is fine for me. I added oil pressure, oil temperature and voltage. I find oil temperature to be a very good indicator of the status of the engine (better than water temperature) and even a good indicator (on my old VW racer) of when the oil level was a half quart low. [ Please excuse the following plugs ] At the time, I had my favorite local shop do the work. I showed up with the parts (including the JTD adapter) and they put them in. That would be BIMMERHAUS in Broomfield, CO. 720-566-0521. They run a number of SCCA cars themselves and wrench on a lot of top cars in the area. Great shop to work with. If I were racing and if I were to do this again I would reconsider the location of the gauges. Putting the extra gauges below the radio and misc controls simply means I do not see them (my right arm is in the way as I use both hands on the wheel and not one or more talking on a cell phone, drinking coffee, etc.). There are a couple good options for placing the gauges up where you can see them. I believe Suzy, Rod and/or others have pictures posted. How many have had the plastic housing fail, and how old was it? Mine has been replaced once and still looks to be in good condition. It started to crack just before the radiator. I think I'll stick with plastic. I'll swap it every time I do a water pump or radiator along with a new thermostat. Does anyone know why it's plastic? I'm sure there must be some reason other than cost. Maybe it provides a better seal and less likely to crack or deform during installation? The right side rear shock, Koni DA's and GC shock mounts, tore completely through the shock tower. Of course, it happened two days before a big autocross event. I took it to Bimmerhaus where they trimmed away the jagged edges and welded in a reinforcing plate on top of the shock tower. Now the shock mounts to this new plate. If it was a small leak, it was the seal starting to fail, a completely failed seal will dump all of the coolant. If you could wiggle the fan around that is an indication of a bad bearing. Failing seals take out the bearing quickly. I installed a new rad, H2O pump and T-stat and housing this past weekend. After I had everything buttoned-up and started to bleed the system, I noticed a significant leak from the new alu T-stat housing. Upon inspection, I discovered that the leak was due to a large crack that occurred during installation (my own fault..rrr). I cleaned-up the OE plastic housing and reinstalled. My cooling system had 70k miles and 9+ years on the clock. It was on my list of items to do this spring, but I was forced to address it a wee bit earlier due to a failed H2O pump seal. I noticed a small coolant leak under the car, and when poking around under the hood, I realized that the fan appeared out of balance when the car was running. After shutting her down, I grabbed the blades/fan clutch and could easily wiggle it side-to-side and back and forth....bad seals. Grant 98 M3/4 Chicago 'burbs

Examining the aftermarket mounts, I've always thought a failure like this is a possibility. I use the updated factory mounts with reinforcement plates. They are cheap and easy to change. I think of them as a sacrificial part, sort of like the rear lower control arm. You can order new sheet metal pieces for the tops of the shock towers from the dealer. The parts are very cheap. I don't think a decent body shop would charge you too much to weld them in. #8. Best brake pad for sreet use? - from Peter Fry

Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2007 11:50:11 -0600 From: Peter Fry <PeterFry@aol.com> Subject: Best brake pad for sreet use? Fellow M3ers, At almost 94k (including 2 driver's schools), I've decided to replace my original brake pads and rotors at a time that's covnenient for me, even thought they still show a little life left. And the local CCA chapter is organizing a brake tech session, so I can get some help on my first attempt at this task. My question: Given that I'd like to retain at least stock performance, keep the brakes very quiet, and wouldn't mind reducing the dust, what pads are recomended? I plan to go with stock rotors. The following are available at Bimmerzone.com: Pagid (stock) PBR Delux PBR Ultimate Ceramic PBR Metal Master Jurid Bosch Ceramic Akebono Ceramic Pro I'm leaning toward the Pagid, since the performance (good for the street) and noise (little) are a known quantity. But I'm seeking the experiences of others. Also- since my brake wear sensors have not yet tripped the light on the dash, is there any reason to replace them along with the pads? I also plan a brake bleed. Any other add-on tasks while I'm working in the area? Thanks, ___ Peter Fry

The Jurid pads are great on the street but dust like mad. I am running the Akebono 'Euro Ceramics' on the M3 right now and really like them. They are really good on the street...zero noise, zero dust, and very good performance. They don't have quite the cold bite of the Jurids (not sure anything does) but they outperform them once you have a couple of stops. I would recommend them. Dave T.
