Taps cut away metal - think about what that means. If the holes are stripped, then running in a tap may seemingly restore the thread, but in fact it will be weakened. There are special taps which roll the threads back into alignment, but you won't be able to get your hands on one easily and the hold will still be weakened. Sometimes a new bolt can instead be used for this purpose. Your problem typically happens if a lug bolt is cross-threaded on assembly. There are three possibilities: 1) The threaded hole in the hub is stripped. Test for this by trying a known good lug bolt. If the problem persists then it's the hole; if not it was the bolt. 2) The lug bolt is stripped. You may be able to detect this visually. See also the test above. 3) Both bolt and hole are damaged. Possible if the a bad bolt is repeatedly used in a bad hole. If the holes are stripped you'll have to have the hub replaced. Relatively cheap and easy on the front, err, not so much on the rear. For the $2 each they cost you'd also be well advised to replace all the lug bolts with new. Neil Fort Wayne, IN 96 M3 - Bastard child 03 525iT - Sterling Grey Metallic 05 Mini - Cooper S with LSD

#2. door blind plugs - from Brian Ruiz

Date: Tue, 1 May 2007 14:19:39 -0700 From: "Brian Ruiz" <eurowerke@gmail.com> Subject: door blind plugs Hey all, I tried to order up p/n 51.71.1.964.810 BLIND PLUG to replace the plugs on the bottom part of my door (to cover the holes used for adjusting the windows). Realoem shows 20mm but these are too small. They ARE circular, not oval as shown on the site (#10 http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BF93&mospid=47486&btnr=41_0842&hg=41&fg=40). I believe I need the 25 mm plugs, p/n 51.71.0.026.750 (#1 25mm http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BF93&mospid=47486&btnr=51_2049&hg=51&fg=80), but my dealer says they are NLA. This seems odd, since the 20mm size is available. Does anyone have a lead on some of these? I'd really appreciate it. I need 4. Thanks, Brian build 8/95

#3. Rough start following cold night - from Gus Iverson

Date: Tue, 1 May 2007 14:39:11 -0700 From: "Gus Iverson" <gus.iverson@gmail.com> Subject: Rough start following cold night My car is currently being parked outside at night. The Seattle area is currently seeing it's typical spring pattern of 40* nights with high humidity or rain. Following those nights, particularly if it rains, I'm experiencing a very rough start with what feels like a miss-fire high idle RPM and a lack of power immediately after startup for 10 seconds at least. Honestly, it feels like my carbeurated, wildly modfied truck which won't even push itself on a perfectly flat surface after cold start for at least a minute or 3, depending on temperature. Could I just not be used to leaving my car out in the cold? Some other nefarious problem? I'm parked outside because my fiance's car (91 325ix) is leaking and we haven't found the source to fix it despite several attempts. As soon as it is water tight, it goes back outside where it belongs... (yes, she agrees) Gus

Sometimes a new bolt can instead be used for this purpose. As Neil mentions, there are tools made for this, thread restorers. I recently picked up an inexpensive one from Sears to get me through the occasional emergency. <http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Hand+Tools%2C+General+Purpose&pid=00942275000&> Rex

I think I'll pick up the set to keep around. I actually keep an M12x1.5 tap/die pair in my track box for emergency use - have only needed it once, although I've lent it out several times - but these would be better. That said and has been mentioned, you may have problems with the 17s. Most of the factory 15" wheels seem to be running ET 46 - ET 47, though a narrow 7" width. 6MM = .23 inches, which places an ET 41 in 7.5 width also in contact, only slightly more so. I think I have almost always heard spacers being required with stock wheels. Tires are 205/60 on 15" wheels Turner recommended a 1/2 inch spacer for the front. Summer tires are 235-40 on 17" wheels and I haven't tried them yet. Will I still need the spacers for the summer wheels and tires? Anybody else have this problem? I never expected this since the coil overs are smaller in diameter than the original struts. Thanks Carey

#7. It's been fun! - from Mel Silva

Date: Tue, 01 May 2007 20:57:39 -0500 From: Mel Silva <melsilva@mindspring.com> Subject: It's been fun! I wanted to send a note and thank everyone for their patience, advice and help for the last 6 years. I joined this list about May of 2001 right after I bought my M3. I sold Penny, my Byzanz '97 M3 Sedan, a week ago Saturday. I sold to another enthusiast whom I referred to this list for it's technical advice. So, if Mike M. sends a message some day with a question about Penny, you know where he got her. I've only met a couple of you and talked to a couple more on the phone, so this has been an "online" experience for the most part and it has payed dividends in many ways. I also appreciate that the after market manufacturers haunt this list and I've received discounts and great advice because of it. I'm now the proud owner of a 5.7L Tundra Doublecab and I don't have to look at tailgates all the way to work and home anymore. Maybe when my daughter is finished with college (she's 4 now), or I make it to CIO, I'll be able to buy a third "fun" car, but for now the M3 just seems so impractical. So, thanks again to all of you and especially Suzy, whom I've never met, but deserves a big hug if I ever do run into her. Mel Silva Houston, TX
