#1. Serpentine Belts - from Foley, Brian

Both my idler pulleys started to squeal badly last month and I replaced both, fairly reasonably too. I use the Continental belts, but the Goodyear are OK too. Brian B.P. Foley Sergeant B.P. #2. radiator, shroud, idler and tensioner bearing maintenance - do you cut the shroud? - from David Michael

Date: Mon, 7 May 2007 09:25:19 -0400 From: "David Michael" <adavidmichael@gmail.com> Subject: radiator, shroud, idler and tensioner bearing maintenance - do you cut the shroud? Folks, Seems that it 'tis the season for belt, radiator and bearing maintenance. I am half way through (have everything apart), and have a few questions that I am hoping there is a BTDT for. 1. All of the literature (including Bentley) indicate that the radiator shroud should be easily removable, with the fan, once the fan is spun off the shaft. Not on my car - on mine, the hose that goes from the bottom of the coolant reservoir to, um something, goes down from the bottle, across the bottom inside of the shroud, up the other side and THROUGH A HOLE in the driver's side of the shroud.. The shroud cannot be removed unless the (very) long hose is snaked through the hole. I have done this, but am wondering , is the conventional wisdom to turn the hole into a slot by cutting the thin web of material off? That way the shroud can be removed (and reinstalled) without distributing the hose. 2. When removing the socket head cap screws that attache the tensioner bearings, does one "block" the tensioner so it does not move, or is there a "stop" against which the tensioner arm will rotate when the screw is removed? The total list of everything I am replacing is (the car has 96,000 miles): 1. Radiator 2. Both belts 3. Two tensioner and one idler bearings 4. Water pump 5. Thermostat Anything else I should do while in there? TIA for this list and everyone's generosity with helpful suggestions. Dave 98 m3/4 96K

Simply take the fan off (left hand thread). I think it's a 32mm. Once the fan is off: 1. Remove the top hose off the expansion tank. this hose also snakes through the top of the shroud and connects to the expansion tank. 2. Remove the plastic shield on the bottom of the car and loosen the bottom hose (there is the one hose coming off the bottom of the radiator as well as the hose coming from the bottom of the expansion tank. 3. Remove the expansion tank as it is simply connected to the shroud and not physically part of the radiator. 4. The long hose that snakes from the drivers side of the car through the bottom of the shroud simply can be pulled out while removing the shroud. The top of the shroud is held to the radiator by two plastic push in type clips. 5. Remove the shroud 6. Remove the radiator. The drain is at the bottom drivers side. Remember to unplug the two sensors on the passenger side of the radiator. Now you have plenty of room to get at the belts, tensioners and thermostat housing. Make sure you buy a new thermostat + o ring, and a new profile gasket for the thermostat housing. It is also ieal to buy the aluminum thermostat housing to replace the oem plastic one. Turner sells this with the profile gasket for $25 or so. Take the belts off, replace the tensioners and put belts back on. shel ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Hi Shel, Thanks for the reply. My suggestion for cutting the shroud was so that if needed at some point in the future, one could remove the fan and shroud without draining the radiator and disconnecting the long snaky hose that goes through the side of the shroud. Already have the aluminum t-stat housing and an 87 deg thermostat (which I think I bought the for my Audi 200 and not the BMW, so I may get another one). Bearings are all off, new w-pump is in ( though I liked the look of the elegant soldered sheet metal impeller more than the ugly looking casting on the new Graf). Should have it wrapped up in a day or two. With or without cutting the shroud. Dave On 5/7/07, Shelhart2@aol.com <Shelhart2@aol.com> wrote: > > No need to cut the shroud. They may have also been MXX3s - at least that's what my '98 had on when I bought it. Jim Bassett
