Hard to know if your noise is clutch wear, release bearing or both. Or something else. Still, you're right: at 185K miles it's got to be coming due. On the plus side the clutch replacement, while certainly a bunch of of work, is more straightforward than the head gasket R&R. I wrote up some tips and shortcuts when I did my clutch a couple of years ago and can send them if/when you want, or you can find them in the Digest archives, #4553 and #4553. #4. OT: Pontiac GTO - from Mark Duckworth
Top
Date: Wed, 09 May 2007 17:23:20 -0400 From: Mark Duckworth <mdlkml@atari-source.com> Subject: OT: Pontiac GTO Hello guys, Sorry for the OT, but I don't know where or who else to ask. Have any of you driven the 06 Pontiac GTO with the Ls2? I kind of have a thing for it, especially the sound, but the test drive was less than thrilling. The car had only 90 miles on it, and despite what others might do I refused to take it higher than 4000 RPM save for one time. That and the dealer looked like he was going to pee his pants. Have any of you compared this car to the E36 in terms of handling and high speed stability. Though I don't go very high speeds very often I do it sometimes and a small difference in handling could be the difference between a bad input causing me to lose the car (and my life) or not. All it really takes is one time and since I know I'll do it at least once, it seems prudent to spend the money if the gto's high speed handling isn't up to snuff like every other american car I've driven. I feel very safe in the M3 at 130+mph, even more so than a late model STi or EVO. The M3 really takes care of the driver at high speeds. I wonder if I could get that stability with the GTO or if I'm kidding myself and I should just target the E46 M3 (with a nice noisy exhaust) for my next vehicle. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Date: Wed, 9 May 2007 15:53:42 -0700 (PDT) From: Scott McClung <smlists@pacbell.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] OT: Pontiac GTO depends what you are looking for. If you want a sports GT cruiser with V8 power - GTO is a good bet. But do not expect M3 driving dynamics. Sure, the grip will be reasonable because of the tires used, but the steering and braking feedback is almost non-existant, and the car is not a crisp handling machine at all in stock form. Compare it to a CLK55 than to a M3. And truly, if you are looking for a GT 2+2 coupe, I would much rather have a CLK55 - even 4 years older - compared to a GTO. Almost no trunk room in the GTO - did you notice that? There is just no comparing GM quality with MBZ / BMW quality for fit and finish. Now - if you are looking for a sports car in a coupe wrapper, like the E36 M3 - the E46 M3 is a better choice. I cannot think of any other 2+2 coupes in this category either, other than the RX8 - which is a very fine handling car, but is lacking in the power dept. Still - if you are looking for something new and trying to hit around $30K, I would say the RX8 is really worth a look if a 2+2 sports car is your goal. Oh, and the WRX-STI and Evo are both sports cars in sedan wrappers, but they are quite crude beasts. Awesome performing cars, but lacking in creature comforts and econo-trash interiors and fit / finish. I owned a Evo-IX for ~9 months. Damn fun little car, but I had an opportunity to purchase a 69 Camaro pro-touring car my buddy built for a lot less than it was worth, so the Evo had to go!! A quick look at curb weights will tell you something about the character of these cars: - RX8 = 3K - E36 M3 = 3.2K - Evo / Sti = 3.3K - E46 M3 = 3.4K - CLK55 = 3.6K - GTO = 3.8K E46 M3 kinda straddles the fence between sports car and a GT. Anything above 3.5Klbs is solidly into GT territory. GTO is quite the boat - weighs about what a 4-door sports sedans like a 545i does. Personally, I would look at 2004 545i's too - since they have a similar power to weight ratio, are more useful, look better, and have far better driving dynamics. And spending $30K on one now, it will not be worth $15K in 2 years either. Resale on the GTO is very weak, as you might expect. Anyway - that is my take on it, for whatever that is worth. My spare track wheels are factory double spokes, 17x7.5, as are my regular wheels. The word is that these tires belong on 8.5" wide wheels. Obviously I've been using the wrong wheels for the street and track all these years as Der Manufakturehr intended it to be. The question is if I spring for a set of 8.5" wheels for my R compounds, will I notice any difference? (besides blowing the budget) I don't race, I just do an occasional track day or school. thanks, Carl 95 M3 ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm ************************************************* __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
