Club racers and autocrossers in the west coast as pointed out previously, in the east coast Chuck Stickley has a monster of an E36 M3 with one. Unfortunately I don't think you'll see any at Mid-Ohio for Memorial Day. Smallish entry list of racers so far. Carlos 98 M3

Crack filler, dye and their leather care products are the best. Regards, Rich

#3. can we still buy bumpers from the stealer? - from Stiles

My front and rear bumpers have been leaned on too many times (by other cars), and been repainted at least once. The rear "diffuser" is on there with what appears to be some duct tape and bailing wire (not quite, but...). In an effort to continue my "restoration", I'm thinking of replacing the bumpers. Can you still buy the pieces from BMW? Thanks, Scott.

Date: Tue, 15 May 2007 09:52:43 -0400 From: "Rob Levinson * UUC Motorwerks" <rob@shortshifter.com> Subject: Re: S54 conversion (was Eurosport TS) The racecars done with the S54 are always done with a stand-alone engine management to maximize power, where emissions and OBD-II compliance are not concerns. Some convert the electronic throttle to a standard mechanical throttle. Street cars is another matter. The few that I've seen are semi-Frankenstein, two cars in one. The standard E36 DME still in place for all the chassis electronics, and the E46 M3 DME running the engine. There is something lost in the process, however, as some features do not work properly... no ASC, Sport throttle, ABS, inaccurate gauges, etc., not to mention a CE light. Difficult or impossible to pass inspection in states with comprehensive OBD-II testing. There is one S54 into an OBD-II E36 M3 transplant in progress right now that will have "factory style" integration of all E46 M3 features... real DSC, TPM, Sport Throttle, etc., all with zero wire splicing. No issues with inspection/OBD-II testing as it's been pre-certified in it's home state. - Rob Levinson > From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> > Subject: Re: S54 conversion (was Eurosport TS) > I was just thinking the other day that although I've seen lots of engine > conversion cars around - Euro E36 M3 to US E36 M3, S50/52 to E30, etc. - > I've personally never come across an S54 to E36 M3 transplant. #6. 98 5-speed transmission for sale - from Jake.Leverett@gtri.gatech.edu

Date: Tue, 15 May 2007 11:18:46 -0400 From: <Jake.Leverett@gtri.gatech.edu> Subject: 98 5-speed transmission for sale I have a manual 5-speed transmission out of a 98 M3. The transmission works great. No shifting problems or grinding issues. I am asking $650, OBO, plus shipping from 30080. The transmission has approximately 100k on it and works great. I upgraded to a 6-speed out of a 2002 M3 so I no longer have a need for this 5-speed. I also have a modified E28 M5(?) spring loaded clutch disc that I used with the above mentioned transmission. This clutch disc was used with an aluminum flywheel to reduce the transmission noise once the dual mass flywheel was removed. The clutch disc has less than 6k miles on it and looks like new. Asking $125, OBO, plus shipping from 30080. The six speed transmission has different input shaft splines so I could not re-use this clutch with the new transmission,.. now it is for sale. I am looking for a pair of E36 M3 front brake calipers including the mounting brackets. If anyone has upgraded to big brakes and therefore has a set of stock front caliper available please contact me. Thanks, Jake

#7. S54s - from jeffrey Lin

Date: Tue, 15 May 2007 08:25:29 -0700 (PDT) From: jeffrey Lin <jeffreywlin@yahoo.com> Subject: S54s The reason why you don't see too many S54s into E36s is because the electronics are bear to deal with. Here are the issues you need to deal with. 1. Drive By Wire throttle. you could of course get the one from an S54 M-Coup/M-Roadster 2. ABS/Traction Ctrl controller is part of engine mgmt on S54...another big wiring headache 3. Anti Theft issues. New ECU talks to even the door locks. So if you look at most swaps, that have happened they are for non street racing applications where emissions control is not an issue and most installs have deleted drive by wire and are using MOTEC, AEM or Electromotive TEC III for ECUs. Most of them have driveability issues because its difficult to get the variable valve timing working well with after mkt ECUS. Its ok for race, but a pain for street. To make it work someone needs to have access to the source code and delete all the non essential functions that you don't need an E36.

I was noticing in an E39 M5 that a push of a button changed the feel of the throttle response. Carlos 98 M3

I was noticing in >an E39 M5 that a push of a button changed the feel of the throttle >response. In theory, but not in reality for me. I have had my dealer update my car to the latest software every few years with no real change in pedal responsiveness. I have thought about buying Conforti software for the car to see if that helps, as some people have reported. And the S54 sport mode is way to sensitive for me. As an electrical/software engineer, I am sure drive by wire and brake by wire can be made into great systems by the OE's with enough time and money. However, this particular implementation is really poor in comparison to what the analog throttle in my 1995 M3 felt like. I guess my real frustration with BMW is that they replaced a perfectly good system with something that is clearly not as good.
