I'm surprised that nobody has started a small business out of this like for the climate control units... Anyone? ;-) On a different note, thanks Brian Foley for the Bavarian Auto write-up, if anyone is trying to diagnose a SAS problem let me know and I'll fwd it along. So I'm pretty sure that's the culprit but I figured I'd post here in case it's a sign for something coming or such... > > Also the best price I found is ~$270 wow that's a lot more than I expected for an air pump, there may be more sensors in there that I don't know but ok... > > Anyone has any good idea to find something cheaper? Stefano, Incredibly I do believe it's just a motor and perhaps a pulse sensor to tell when it moves one revolution. It could be that and the car varies the voltage to control motor speed, or motor speed isn't controlled at all, or it's a stepper motor. Either way, it's HUGELY overpriced and the motor could probably be pulled from a vacuum cleaner. I'm not going to try though :-P As for your diagnosis, sounds dead on. There's also a VANOS sprocket wrench...looks like a ring with a handle. Makes it much easier to rotate the VANOS sprockets when putting things back together. If you wind up buying tools, spend the dough on a quality head bolt socket. I got one of the cheapies ($19) from ZDMAK. The clip holding the detent ball broke and the ball went sailing into parts unknown...probably not in the engine. The fit on the bolt heads was also nothing to write home about. I got the cam lock from these guys. Worked good: http://www.catalystracing.net/ I just used stiff wire for the upper tensioner, and didn't need (as far as I know, anyway) the air tool for the VANOS. Followed the directions in the 101 Projects book, and it went back together without a hitch. No thrown VANOS codes yet. I also found the info/pics in the 101 Projects book to be useful. -Pete On 5/29/07, marty <mfraiser@earthlink.net> wrote: > > Date: Tue, 29 May 2007 22:25:52 -0400 > From: marty <mfraiser@earthlink.net> > Subject: Tools for head R&R > > Greetings, > I need to remove my head and have it refurbished, etc. I've got > everything removed now except the head itself. > With all the recent head gasket work discussed on the list I thought I'd > see which special tools are required and a good place to get them. > Maybe even someone has them lying around and would let me borrow them. > I think it requires at least cam/and flywheel locks, dummy tensioner, > and thin-wall deep E12 head bolt socket. Part of that low price includes a sincere promise to return them eventually. You can basically have them as long as you need them. My head R&R took 3 months, but I think 7,000 miles later, I'm doing alright and I should be able to let them go for a while. The tools were expensive :-/ My TDC pin didn't fit in the hole so I spent about an hour filing it down with a dremel tool to fit right. So you have tested tools :-P Oh and if you screw up the job and need the tools back, you can get them again (or keep them longer) without paying a rental fee again. The list I have available is: BMW head bolt socket VANOS sprocket tool (96+ necessary) cam locks TDC pin fan wrench and holder Things I either don't have available or won't rent out that you'll need: 3/8" torque wrench (one that can do small Nm values) Torque angle gauge (good luck, the el-expensive snap-on won't fit on the rear of the engine if it's in the rear of the car, I made one home made and even then I really had to guess and pray). I also have parts lists, a vendor who pretty consistently gave me 25% off retail, reassembly checklists, yada yada. Email me off list if interested. Just for reference, I put a new O2 sensor and new air filter on my '95 M3 LWT and took it for a test-only smog today. It passed. Below are this year's numbers, as well as those from 2005 (it failed in the first test, then I replaced the O2 sensor and it passed). Note that in both cases, it just barely passed HC (83 & 84 out of a permissible 85) at low rpm. Car has 19,200 miles and the drivetrain is 100% stock -- stock intake, motor, exhaust, DME, etc.). I replaced the (stock) head gasket and it's holding up nicely.
