Where I run (Typically Pacific Raceways and its horrific pavement), my suspension settings (certainly non-optimal as I have no clue what I'm doing with them), and how I drive (bad / slow) dictate a lot of this but my current settings are no where near enough and I'm rolling over the outside lip of each tire. This is with: 425 front 500 rear TCK D/A Konis Once I get a chance to get it realigned, probably just before the GGC trip to T-Hill which is going to be my next track event (getting married in between) I am going to go back to a minimum of -2 front on the street and -2.5 rear. Tires roll over period is my conclusion after last weekend. I had previously been confused by a picture of a friend's C-Mod car with its 18 slicks looking like they were about to come off the rim through the keyhole at Mid-Ohio. They were rolling over big time. Then last weekend I get to see the pro photographer's pictures of my car through madness and the horror! My RA1s look like they're about to come off the rim as well. Neat picture with both right side tires rolling over big time and the front left happily up in the air looking like I might know what I'm doing. I know that's not true so I didn't buy the picture. :-) Carlos 98 M3

Glad you concur with my assessment. Had the E46M3 out at Willow Springs this past weekend in 100 deg F temps with a 'cooling' 30 mph wind to make you feel like you were in a convection oven (and move the car around a bit). Never had a grip problem (driver problems and engine temp problems were plenty, but no grip issues). This was their third track weekend and I am starting to see some wear. They are getting slightly more noisy, but nothing tragic yet. If I hadn't forgotten to set the ChaseCam g-meter calibration, I could have told you the g's that they develop (reference above driver problems...). <sigh> I'll fix that driver error this weekend at Buttonwillow for the club race. The ChaseCam is really a slick little setup being all solid state. I got 4 sessions on one 2 gig CF card and the video quality was better than I had hoped for and I was at the default setting (normal quality), not highest quality. The lipstick style camer has a nifty little mount that clamps on to only the passenger headrest post (not a decapitation device that clamps to both seats). I didn't try the outside suction cup mount yet, but might have to for more perspectives. Back to the RE-01R's, I was using 34F and 32R cold (relative term -- think 80 deg F as cold) starting pressures. Still not rolling them over to the triangles on the sidewall so I could probably drop 2psi all around. No temp data ('hot to the touch and sticky' isn't really meaningful data, I guess). So far so good with the RE-01R's. The squirm is unbelievable and is definitely a butt-clencher. There is nothing like going up into T2 at Sears Point at full steam and having the the whole car squirm under braking, just about pitching off the inside hill. All the RA1s I've used since then have been shaved and heat cycled. I'd absolutely shave them, but you could pretty much heat cycle them yourself (as others have mentioned). The only time I would use full tread is in the wet. Drive Safely, Raza

No disrespect, but that's a *driver* issue, not a tire issue. Going full-steam on full-tread tires initially is just plain silly. I've run a full-tread set on the race car, bought & mounted at AIM at Sears on the track day and not had an issue. Could I feel the squirm through T10? Hell, yes! :-) Did I expect it and adjust my driving to the "conditions"? Yes. By the end of the day, they felt just fine. "Conditions" applies to not only to weather and the track surface, but also the car. Got new tires; brakes; new suspension settings? Then the "conditions" have changed and one needs to drive accordingly. There's a reason most race events start out with a "practice" session; an advanced-level HPDE driver is probably at the point where the first session of a track day should be used in a similar fashion. IMNSHO, of course :-) > All the RA1s I've used since then have been shaved and heat cycled. IMNSHO, this is a waste of money for an HPDE application. I ran RA-1s on the M3 for ~10,000 track miles, always full-tread. I still run them as transit and non-race-event tires on the race car, also full-tread. During my brief time using Hoosiers last year/early this year, they were even practice session tires. I can get a set to last a full year, easily. Sometimes more, if I'm not doing a whole lot of non-race events. If you're doing some kind of competitive event (time trial, race, etc), then yeah, a shave on the RA-1s will be beneficial. If you're "just" doing HPDEs, put the shaving money toward more seat time - or more beer at event dinners, whichever :-) Cheers, Jim Bassett
