#1. Sunroof Removal - from RFKoby@aol.com
Top
Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2007 23:12:46 EDT From: RFKoby@aol.com Subject: Sunroof Removal I have removed the cassette mechanism in my racecar / trackcar. The panel was welded back in place WITHOUT any exterior paint damage. When reinstalling the panel you can do this with or without the rubber gasket seal. With the gasket the gap is about 1/16", if you remove the gasket the gap is about 3/8". There are advantages and disadvantages going either way. The important thing to remember is that the sunroof cassette is also the "catch pan" for any water that leaks in past the gasket. The cassette has 4 drain tubes, each going to a pillar. I removed my gasket because I wanted a material only to seal the gap. I was sure how good the seal could be or what it would look like with the rubber gasket in place with sealant applied. To permanently install the panel and weld it into place I used 16 gauge metal strips approx. 3" x 6". 2 on the long edges, and 1 on each of the short edges. I centered the panel (without gasket) by using 3/8" nylon or rubber tubing as spacers. I held the panel into position with welding magnets. Closely examine the inside structure of the panel and roof. The inner skin of each has contours that are spaced away from the exterior skin. Low amperage MIG welding on these interior contours and a wet towel on the exterior skin prevents any heat damage. Once the panel is welded in place, cover the gap from the inside with painters tape (the blue stuff). From the outside, fill the 3/8" gap all the way around with high grade silicone. Very carefully smooth the silicone and "wet" it to the edges. Let dry and remove the painters tape on the inside. bob ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Less weight gain (over the M3)... I've been tracking some of the developments on e90post.com, and it sounds like the 335i can be turned into an animal w/a Quaife LSD, PSS9s, and some good lightweight wheels+rubber. Optionally, you can flash the ECU and go chasing Porsches (335i's w/a flash are now pushing close to 400whp. Craziness. AWD adds weight, and increases the tendency to understeer, plus adds some element of torque steer. While it is surely better than FWD, I will take a RWD car for performance any-day. Well, at least given the fact that I do live in sunny most of the year CA :-) I know a bit about the subject, because I have owned both a E36 M3 and a Evo IX in my long and sordid car history. And cheaper too - something in the mid $30's. I think they have back seats too, which is a bonus over the M-coupe. I tend to think that car will give the Z4 M-coupe a run for it's money at a $15K discount. Vewy vewy intewesting.... I have replaced them in the past because of hall effect sensor issues and now its time to remove the seats for recovering and I need to remove them again. I can't tell from the TIS what color the indicator needs to be for them to be removed and what color it should be when they are installed. Is it green and they work or green and they are safe to remove? tia, Ed
