How many miles/years are on them? I had a very similar shimmy from my front end, but it was cured with new tie-rods, control arm bushings, and new control arms. Looking at the old pieces the balljoints on the control arms were completely destroyed and flopped around like a soggy noodle. I'm sure the other components made a difference too, but my control arms looked to be in the worst shape compared to all the other parts. They were the original suspension components that had 8 years and 130K miles on them (including decent track/autocross mileage). Drive Safely, Raza

As mentioned there are three fasteners: one on the right at the panel break under the removable 'plug' - use a small flat blade screw driver to remove this decorative screw cover; one on the left just INBD of the light switch (as I recall) at the panel break; and one on the right under the panel at the panel edge. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CD93&mospid=47504&btnr=51_ 3074&hg=51&fg=30 Also note that there is a tab that extends under the console that needs to be wiggled free and on the vertical edge on the left there are two prongs of 'hooks' that attach to the dash board. Remove the light from the panel in the foot well feeding it through the panel and there are wires that attach to the buzzer that is attached to the panel - disconnect the wires. The small door in the panel is for OBDII interface. Installation is the opposite of removal except watch for the 'fork' that captures the panel and locates it vertically at the firewall. -------------------- 1 -------------------- Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2007 12:57:09 -0700 From: "Peter Loron" <peterloron@gmail.com> Subject: Brake switch replacement - how to remove the panel? I need to replace my brake light switch. I pulled the two obvious screws from the panel under the steering wheel, but was stymied by the smooth clip/button/whatever at the top right corner of the panel. Do I just keep tugging on the panel to get that out? Once I get the top panel removed, does the bottom panel (actually covering the tops of the pedals, etc) just slide out? Any tips for the rest of the panel removal / replacement process? Thanks! Pete

It gives me some good places to start. I have the Euro floating rotors and had thought that that would have prevented the warping (one of the original reasons I went with them), but it does not sound like it. I went from the Hawk HPS pads to the Akebono ceramic Euro Ultra Premium brake pads so the differing pads and compound may be adding to the issue as someone had suggested. I also have the M3 LTW rims and I wonder if one of the rims is bent from all our great roads her in Chicago. Most of them look like the surface of the moon. It is interesting that you had a similar shimmy Raza. My car has right around the same amount of miles with all original parts. I would not be surprised if this was it. I would really have hoped that my mechanic would have seen this when I took the car to him last Friday. Makes one wonder...... It is difficult to check the balljoints of the arms when they are on the car, but just for safety's sake, I'd probably replace them as soon as possible, especially if you happen to do any tracking or autocrossing. A control arm failure is probably one of the worst suspension failures and could end up very badly. I forget exact service intervals for the control arms, but here is some info from BMWCCA Club Racing: http://www.bmwccaclubracing.com/Information/0202.htm On the upside, my car literally felt brand new after I did my front-end maintenance. I also opted to replace the steering guibo (coupling) that mates the steering shaft to the rack as the rubber tends to degrade and everything feels super precise. I can't directly correlate the precision to the steering guibo (since a lot of other parts were also added), but being able to compare the deflection of the old coupling to the new one was very interesting. All that is left for me is to address some of the rear ball-joints, subframe and diff bushings and everything should be better than new. Drive Safely, Raza
