#2. San Jose (Bay Area) body shop - is B-Line good to work with? - from Steve Sharp

Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2007 16:32:04 -0700 From: "Steve Sharp" <steve.sharp@xilinx.com> Subject: San Jose (Bay Area) body shop - is B-Line good to work with? OK, so it's a little off topic, but I need a recommendation on getting top flight body repair for my wife's 2001 330i sedan. It lives in the garage next to my '97 E36M3, so I figured I would ask this knowledgeable list. An idiot in a rental truck backed out a parking space right into my wife's car, opening up the left rear door like a can of beans. Bent the trailing edge of the driver's door and damaged the left rear wheel arch. Doesn't look like it got anything in the suspension or drive train, though. From what I've read here and on my local shop's recommendation, I'm leaning towards B-Line Body Shop in San Jose. I hear they do great work, although the wait might be a little longer than average. We're going to put the claim through our State Farm policy and have them go after the other guy's insurance (both Budget Rental and his Farmer's policy). I was told we should get our deductible back since it was clearly his fault. We haven have a witness that saw the whole thing. Anyone have experience dealing with B-Line and also getting the estimate approved through insurance? Thanks for your help, Steve

Well, my feedback is about 10 years old (they did some work on the previous 328is), but that's pretty much what I remember. Easy to deal with, excellent work, but pretty busy. And as far as I can recall, they have been an advertiser & supporter of the GGC for the 11 years I've been a member. If that means anything to you :-) Cheers, Jim Bassett

#4. Help w/Oil Leak Diagnosis - from Greg Gantt

Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2007 20:19:30 -0400 From: Greg Gantt <ggantt@gantt-consulting.com> Subject: Help w/Oil Leak Diagnosis I just repaired my oil pump nut and now have a slight oil leak that seems to come from the dipstick tube/top of oil pan area. I've already replaced the o-ring on the tube, which I found I had torn when installing the pan, and inspected the pan gasket which looks fine. Anyone out there had a similar problem getting the tube/o-ring/pan to seal? Should I be using a gasket sealer on the o-ring and tube? I find it leaks only when driving the car around where I suspect it is sloshing, so I haven't been able to get a visual on the exact source of the leak when I have it running in the driveway. My biggest fear is that I may have somehow cracked the pan when I removed it, as it was stuck on the bottom of the motor and I used a rubberized hammer to dislodge it. I don't see any damage/cracking, but as you know visibility down there is tough - I don't want to have to drop the pan again just to inspect. Any ideas how can I diagnose if my pan is cracked or if it's just the o-ring that's not sealing? If you haven't already repaired/checked your oil pump nut, I strongly recommend doing it as you could be driving a time bomb like I was. When I dropped the pan, I found the nut was missing completely. I'm guessing the centering force of the drive chain was the only thing keeping the sprocket on the shaft. I have no idea how long it was like this - could have been 12 years or the last turn into the garage before I shut it down. I did ultimately find the nut lodged in the oil pickup housing. I had been procrastinating on doing the fix for the past two years. I'm sure glad I did it now and caught it before the sprocket fell off and caused major damage. Greg '95 M3

#10. Re: [E36M3] San Jose (Bay Area) body shop - is B-Line good to work with? - from Raza Uddin

Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2007 01:44:28 -0700 From: "Raza Uddin" <raza.uddin@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] San Jose (Bay Area) body shop - is B-Line good to work with? Steve, I just picked up my car from some repair at B-Line today. My insurance carrier is State Farm also. I had hit a "block" of Salinas' finest lettuce growing soil which cracked my bumper and took out the mesh, auxiliary fan, AC condenser, foglights and destroyed all the underbody plastics (including my JTD underpanel). Also, it provoked a leak from steering rack which was also replaced. My accident happened the 3rd week of April, and I was able to go for an estimate the first of May. B-Line was booked until the end of May, and the repairs took from May 29th until today June 19th. The repair time took longer than I had expected, but from dealing with other body shops, I figured I'd give them the time so I could expect absolute quality. After I had the accident, I did a little "estimate" myself by putting the car in the air and going over the front of the car. It was definitely helpful to have your own idea of what needed replacement, especially dealing with the insurance and insurance adjuster. My adjuster did not approve a lot of the things I felt needed to be replaced, like the radiator because the bent AC condenser had made contact with it, and the steering rack which I had noticed was starting to leak. Working with Peter on the teardown of the car, he was able to convince State Farm to allow replacement of those parts. They were pretty helpful in working with me to replace aftermarket parts. Since I had a JTD underpanel, they were able to credit the money for stock underpanel parts in helping to pay for some extra body work that was not caused by the accident. B-Line insisted on parts from the dealer, except for the radiator and AC condenser because State Farm insisted on using aftermarket replacements. I had replaced the radiator about a year earlier with a Behr and was able to get the same. Perhaps the only complaints was that I needed to call every few days for an update and to make sure that they were relatively on schedule to get my car back. Part of this is probably being attributed to my being anal about the car, but I like constant updates. My main piece of advice is to make sure State Farm is covering everything to your satisfaction. The State Farm estimate was almost 50% less than the B-Line estimate, but I was adamant that certain things needed to be replaced. They tried to get by with some "refurbished" parts, but I made sure B-Line only used new, OE quality parts for replacement. Overall, their work was top notch (as much as I have been able to see) and they were certainly the best body shop I've dealt with. Drive Safely, Raza Uddin
