#5. front pusher fan - from Andy Radin
Top
Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2007 09:46:18 -0700 From: "Andy Radin" <fourfa@fourfa.com> Subject: front pusher fan Over the weekend I hit an owl at 80 mph, as he dived for a mouse frozen in my headlights on a very dark rural highway. Damn shame, it was a big 4' wingspan white owl. Poor guy didn't make it. Anyway I ended up with a small section of the front pusher fan knocked out - a chunk of one fan blade, and a section of the ring between blades. Of course now the car vibrates like crazy when the fan kicks on. Pricing this thing out on realoem, looks like the only part number is for the whole fan/motor/shroud assembly at some $670. Is it possible to get just the fan itself? Nothing wrong with the motor. Or am I better off searching ebay etc for takeoffs? One concern here is I haven't noticed a great deal of durability in the E36 plastic parts, and if feasible I'd rather not trade my broken aged brittle plastic fan for someone's else's unbroken aged brittle plastic fan. thanks, andy r. 98 m3/2

I agree - I drove the same vehicle for a test drive last year or 2 years ago. I was not impressed at all. Steering feel was a joke. Interior was a mass of cheap looking plastic. Car had decent power, but that was about it. It was not even close to the same category as the 540iT that I owned for a year. And I guarantee the depreciation on a Magnum would be far greater than the $1500 I saw with that 540 wagon after 1 year and 10K miles of use. Gotta love that!! I would even like to see a 535i wagon with the turbo I6. The 530xit is OK, but needs just a bit more power!! Also - the cargo space in that Magnum wagon is about the same as a S4 or 3 series wagon - 5 series wagon has a lot more useable cargo space. If I were picking wagons I would probably rate them in this order: - E55 (although, quite expensive - this is the ultimate sports wagon available today) - Volvo V70R - Audi S4 Avant (ranked lower than S4 due to size) - Audi A6 - BMW 530xit - E350 / 500 - Magnum SRT8 Yes - I've driven them all. Well - not the SRT version of the Magnum, but I can imagine what a R/T with an extra 100hp is like. And for slightly lager wagons, the R63 AMG minivan thingy is interesting. Not new, but figure 3-4 years old those things are going to drop like a rock and I bet will be a pretty smoking deal. I bought a non-SRT8 for the wife in Feb., though. Yes the fit and finish inside in plastic galore. But we are talking how many thousands in prce diff???? It is heavy and in need of a suspension upgrade. The SRT8 is much better than an RT in feel. The 425hp and the Brembos makes it a heavy rocket that will stop and leave your eyeballs plastered to the windscreen. No it's not a e36 but for a big heavy sedan it will do. You can pick up a SRT8 around here (SF Bay Area) for mid-30's if you don't go for the nav and misc crap. So how much is that 535 wagon that will out handle the SRT8, but not out accelerate or out stop? It will probably out last it though. Not blasting my favorite brand but, the Barbarians; oops I mean Bavarians, that don't want to ship a good 3 series, 4-Door M-Car to the US will miss out on my cash. An M5 is just way out of my price range. A new M3/4 is at least palatable in price when you factor in the service that comes with it. Still on the high side for me with 3 school age kids. So to compare apples to pears A 535ix Touring *STARTS at $55K and optioned with sport package and other bits is about $60K and some. The magnum SRT8 with nearly the same options comes in at right under $40K. This includes the extra 100hp and some BIGGG brembo brakes. The 5 series has AWD, which i can take or leave. The SRT8 has decent fit/finish and the leather looks good. There is a reason why the SRT8 cars are in demand. Where else can you get a rocket sedan that is about as fast as last generation's M5 for less than half the price of the current M5?
