Comparing Car & Driver's specs for a 1995 M3 coupe and a 2003 330i ZHP sedan is very illuminating. Although the E46 is listed as heavier and with a bit less power it is a virtual dead heat in the performance measures (perhaps thanks to the six-speed and diff ratio?). We own one of each. The ZHP corners flatter and although it feels slower, I think that's just because it is leaps and bounds more refined than the M3 (read: smooth and quiet) on the inside. For us the two extra doors sealed the deal: we love the ZHP. I was shocked how little usable interior volume you gain going from an E46 to a 5-Series of the same vintage and I'd imagine the E46 is even larger than the older 5-series cars. Why not a low milage late model e36/4 and then bolt a TwinScrew supercharger on it? 360 rwhp, 315lbft torque, 4 doors, plus all that you know about the e36 is still relevant. Slap some Stoptechs or the big brakes of your choice on it, tweek the suspension and you've got a top notch car. I've got dibs on the first silver/black with a split folding rear seat! Barrett

Dan Goodman, Brad Huseman, Graeme Weston-Lewis, and I have a busy season at the track this year as part of our "BimmerHaus Track Rats" team. We now have 9 track days in our BimmerHaus/Co's BMW/Tire Source E36 M3s under our belts from three different BMW CCA driving schools: Missouri Valley Chapter at Motorsports Park Hastings (Hastings, NE), Iowa Chapter at Mid-America Motorplex (Pacific Junction, IA), and of course our own chapter's spring school at PMI. We'll all be participating in SCCA Club Time Trials as well this season, looking at a max of 17 track days this year if the tire budgets hold :-) We've had a blast on our road trips, and have met some great folks so far this year. Our April trip to Motorsports Park Hastings was over the top thanks to our MVC hosts and George Anderson at MPH. Nine RMC instructors made the trip, as well as four RMC students, and I think its safe to say we all had a great time. George--thank you for being such a terrific host, and congratulations on a fantastic facility. We will definitely be back--but only if George gets the bus out. (Can't say any more about that, other than, if George gets the bus out, get on. Seriously.) Video #1: Graeme at MPH http://www.generic-racing.org/photos/data/538/mvc_bmw_cca_de_at_mph.wmv June has been very busy, with back to back schools--the first at Mid-America Motorplex in Pacific Junction, IA. There, we drove with the nice folks of the Iowa Chapter BMW CCA on another fun track, especially for the higher horsepower crowd. Doug's BBQ makes this school worth the trip! Video #2: Dave at MAM http://www.generic-racing.org/photos/data/538/ia_bmw_cca_de_at_mam.wmv The following week, we made our way to our chapter's spring driving school, down in Pueblo. Still working on the video from that event (teaser: we now have telemetry :-) Please consider joining us next season at one or both of the MVC and IA schools--try out some new tracks, make some new friends, and eat really good food :-) Look for a writeup of our road trips by Brad, Dan, Graeme, and me in the Motorsports Report in an upcoming issue. Thanks to our MVC and IA chapter hosts, as well as the MPH and MAM staff. You make it worth the trip! Best regards, David Jobusch RMC BMW CCA Secretrary and Instructor

#10. Active Stage II Super Charger Kit#2 - from Matt Bader

Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2007 17:21:57 -0400 From: "Matt Bader" <mbader@exammaster.com> Subject: Active Stage II Super Charger Kit#2 I just got my car back from the A.A. C38 Rotrex Stage II s/c installation. All went well except there was one large pipe which goes from the bottom of the blower to the intercooler that was about three inches short. The shop was able to modify/extend (need to look under there to see how exactly they did it) the piping, and everything else seems to have installed without issues. Active claimed all parts should have fit perfectly, so who knows. Drove home with a lot of traffic so couldn't really test things out. I think the increase in power is mainly up higher, but I'll certainly find out over the next couple of days. Eventually I'll have it dyno'd to get a more objective measure of the hp change. I also still have the stock exhaust on the car, and think it would help to open that up a bit. I am having it installed this week. I dared not do it myself as I cannot afford to spend a whole week-end trying to get things set up correctly. Work is too busy. The kit is for the Rotrex C38 supercharger, and active claims roughly 355 whp with stock manifold, about 20 more with the OBDI manifold conversion. So, we shall see how it goes and what kind of results I get. I am not 100% happy with all of the piping, added weight, complexity that I now have on my car, but the performance trade-off seems worth it. Time will tell... Next will be Jenny Craig for my car, trying to get it under 3000 lbs.
