Not silly at all, IMO. I made the same decision fairly recently when the used set of Koni's I had on the car started to leak. The car is strictly a daily-driver now and on top of that a small segment of the freeway I travel daily is very "washboard-y" :-) So I went with new OE BMW struts/shocks. Haven't regretted it, car handles great (duh!) and is as family-friendly as it's going to get :-) Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP

Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2007 11:30:48 -0700 From: "Scott" <stiles_s@hotmail.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Shock options I'm a huge bilstein fan -- probably installed a dozen sets in various cars. I'm running the "revalved" (i.e. "current") bilstein sports in my '97 M3/2 and they work really well. As with all bilsteins, their high [shaft] speed compression damping is fairly harsh, but if you can get beyond that and a slight bounciness in the rear, they work great paired w/OE springs. I'm super picky about shocks, and am satisfied w/these. That said, there's somebody on bimmerforums selling OE shocks for really cheap (can't remember the name, just search on sachs/boge -- it's a recent thread). At the time I did my suspension Bilsteins and OE shocks were about the same price, so I went with Bilsteins. Were I to do it again today, given the $$ delta, I'd probably go OE. The first two generations of Bilsteins were fine for me with stock springs, but others thought they were a little harsh with stock or lowered springs. This latest generation is really plush, maybe a little too plush for my taste, but work excellent with stock springs. Bilsteins are my shock of choice for pure street cars and trucks. I currently have them on my Tacoma and M3, will be installed soon on my Mazda 6 Wagon, and I should have put them on my M Coupe. >Also, am I being silly in insisting on OE BMW Parts? I personally don't think so, all three of my M3's have only had OE BMW parts except for aftermarket mods. Given how many BMW dealers have internet pricing that is so close to the OEM parts guys, IMHO, I don't see a reason to not go OE. Rex

But hey. add the LSD and some 18x9's all the way around, plus the SW upgrade to boost the power... Better yet, I wonder if our E36 wheels will fit the 1series? I have a set of BBS 18x9's that would be perfect. I think I may need to get one of these.
